The Dark Side of the Ring

Post by Alien Redrum »

I LOVE documentaries. If they are well put together, I'll watch about any topic. This one is a series about big stories in wrasslin'. Now, I was never a HUGE fan of wrestling, but I watched my share back in the day. I was a WWF fan, but I hated Hulk Hogan. I didn't like the WWE because it seemed to have all the old ass wrestlers that I just didn't like (Ric Flair, Scott Steiner, etc.).

I distinctly remember the day I stopped watching, and that was when two of my favorite wrestlers, Big Daddy Cool and Razor Ramone, left WWF for WCW.

ANYWAY, the point is, I haven't watched in what? 20+ years? And when I did, it was when nothing else was on.

But hot damn, is this series, The Dark Side of the Ring, really, really good. I'm about four episodes and and I've enjoyed them all.

It's great because people are pretty honest. I mean, granted, there is definitely shit danced around, and some (Abdullah the Butcher) are lying their asses off about some things, but overall it's not glossing over shit.

Jim Cornell? Probably the funniest motherfucker in this series.

So far, here's what I've watched:

"The Match Made in Heaven": Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth
"The Montreal Screwjob": Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and The Montreal Screwjob
"The Killing of Bruiser Brody": Bruiser Brody
"The Last of the Von Erichs": Von Erich family

Hands down, so far, the best one is "The Montreal Screwjob". If you've seen Wrestling With Shadow, you know one half of this story. This is the other half. Razor Ramone drops some shit that kind of blew my mind.

"The Last of the Von Erichs" is probably my least favorite so far. That's not to say it's not good, it is. But I"ve seen a documentary on them before and a lot of this was what I already knew.

"The Killing of Bruiser Brody" is interesting as hell because I never knew this story (or this wrestler), but hot damn, it's worth watch for Mr. Atlas alone.

"The Match Made in Heaven" is okay. Just talks about the relationship of Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth. One interesting thing, though, is it's subtly implied he beat her, but no one out and out says it.

But, yeah, if you like documentaries, this is a good show. It's like 20 for 20, but all about wrestling. If you like wrestling (especially if you were a fan from the 70s - 90s), you'll probably love this.

It's on both HULU and Discovery+, but you can also find episodes on YouTube.

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan

WWF and WWE are the same thing, do you mean WCW?
I only watched in the 80s. Sgt Slaughter, Junkyard Dog... that era. Hated Hogan with a passion.

Yeah, I did.

Good catch.

Yeah! See, I watched a LOT of '80s, fell off, came back and was like, "Hogan's still wrestling? He's like 80." I still hated him.

He's the worst.

Back then I liked Hacksaw Jim Duggin.

I"m watching one about the Fabulous Moolah now. Wow, what a cunt.

Hell yeah! Me too.

I liked Corporal Kirchner too. I remember having the WWF Wrestling Superstar figure toys as well. Those were awesome.

I was out by the late 80s though. Couldnt deal with it anymore.

Remember that time we had a match, but we had to do it at your house because my parents hated me and wouldn't buy me the square circle? :(
