The Fades

Post by Alien Redrum »

I'm halfway through the first series of this BBC show and I'm pretty impressed with it so far. Definitely gets increasingly better with each episode.

Anyone watch this?

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan

On a somewhat related note, DJ, is the network this is on the equivalent to HBO, FX or just regular network TV?

Public service broadcaster that we have to pay our compulsory TV license for. This is not the same as pay TV in the US (we have cable/satellite TV as an equivalent). It's a big thing to explain when I'm typing on my phone, so I won't.

Basically the BBC is funded entirely from the license fee and has no commercials. Not sure how that compares to your HBO etc.

It's their form of public broadcasting. Our form of public broadcasting shows their shows. Downton Abbey, anyone?

This show got really good fast. I'm about to finish the first season. I think you guys will like it, especially if you liked Buffy. It's like Buffy before she got super annoying.

No. It's via donations and grants from the government.

(Unless those grants come from our taxes, then I guess we are. )

They don't have Mexicans in the UK.

You need to make it something about Indians, kebabs and DJ's mother.

Yep, what AR said. We pay for it through taxes and donations. PBS (Public Broadcasting System) isn't government run, but it's partially funded by the government with the rest coming from donations and corporate sponsorships. Our shows you've probably heard of from there are Sesame Street, science shows like Cosmos and Nova, and Antiques Roadshow which is a rip off of one of your shows. PBS generally also shows a lot of BBC shows, and was actually about the only place that you could see BBC shows in the US. Still kind of is since BBC America shows James Bond movies, reruns of Star Trek, and the US made Gordon Ramsey shows most of the time.

PBS is where you'd find Dr. Who (the really old ones), Poirot/Ms. Marple series, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served? Fawlty Towers, etc. Now, their big UK shows are Downton Abby and the new Sherlock Holmes. When I lived in Seattle we also picked up the Canadian version of PBS and the weekend was nothing but Coronation Street.
