Today we learned that Blair gets a $10,000 a month allowance. She's getting audited by the IRS, because I guess that's something IRS agents do to rich minors? Everyone is worried for Blair. Tootie tells her that her lawyer parents have represented people in a lot of cases against the IRS and it's always bad news. Blair laughs and basically tells her that as a rich white woman she has nothing to be afraid of from the IRS. Later, when she's going to meet with the agent she's making Tootie serve them coffee.

That episode aired in 1982. In today's money, that would be $27,337.66 a month. How fucking rich were her parents????

And of course they made Tootie serve them. You can do that when you have $27,337.66 a month money. :(

Yeah, I didn't want to do the adjustment for inflation

FWIW, Blair did explain that while it sounds like a lot, it's really not. It's not just spending money, most of it goes to pay for her school, bills, investments and savings deposits, leaving her with very little actual cash each month.

Don't be jealous of her, though. It turns out her dad was using her accounts to launder money or something, and that's what the IRS was really after.

I was curious how Jo joined too, and as I expected, they never quite say how her parents pay for school. They say she joined a motorcycle gang in the Bronx when she was 14 (like Shiki did) and so her mom sent her there. Apparently they allow 14 year old white girls to ride their motorcycles the Eastland Academy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_T ... Polniaczek

This also shows that Tootie was always the victim. Apparently there's an episode where the other girls feed her alcohol for some reason, and another one where she runs away and gets pimped. Because a black girl can't run away with out that happening to them.

Later on when they leave the school and work at Mrs. Garret's bakery it's called Edna's Edibles. So there was a lot more going on there than anyone thought at the time.

You're not going to believe this.

I'm watching it right now as I drink my morning coffee. Eastland is having a slave auction.

Of course they are.

The money goes to charity, so it's okay, right?

Tootie doesn't think so. She's anti-slavery and says so. Blair thinks it's a great idea. Natalie demands that Tootie buy her. Jo thinks it's a great way to raise money for charity. Everyone thinks the black girl needs to get over herself.

Also, there's only 1 bunk bed in their room, and guess who has the top bunk? Tootie. They also make her turn off the lights after they get into bed. Because, being the farthest from the switch, and in the top bunk which is the hardest to get into in the dark, it only makes sense that that priviliged white kids make the single black kid do it.

Jo just told Tootie that being a slave owner was supposed to be fun. I can't take this.

This is getting worse. Tootie has been running Natalie ragged, basically treating her like a slave. Or, how they treat Tootie. Natalie has a melt down and says even Kunta Kinte got more respect than her.

And the show ends with Natalie hating Tootie the slave owner

No lesson here, nothing really going on, just yep this happened and Tootie learned she liked owning slaves too, enough even to make her BFF Natalie hate her. I was expecting some kind of, "Jeez Tootie you were right, it sucks to be a slave" or something like that. Nope. Instead of Tootie winning the others over to her point of view, Tootie once again has been peer pressured by the rich white girls into liking rich white girl things, which in this case was slaves.
