Maybe you guys can help me because I am not a technical wizard.
I own every season/volume of Spongebob Squarepants and Family Guy on DVD. When I play the DVDs on a standard television, they look great, and I have no complaints.
However, when I play them on my 40" Sony 1080p HDTV, they look like absolute shit!
Every time something moves onscreen (especially when a camera angle switches), these delayed horizontal lines flicker across anything that moves. I think the professional term is combing, but whatever it is, it's absolutely pissing me off.
Now is this the result of a poor video presentation on the DVD (perhaps because they are interlaced), or is there something wrong with my setup?

Re: Combing present on animated DVDs.
It could be a number of things. I'm guessing your TV is LCD, right? What DVD player do you have and how is it connected to the TV?
What's happening is, either the DVD or the DVD player is sending the image to your LCD TV as an interlaced image, which is causing what you describe. If your player is using component cables or HDMI/DVI cables, it should be set to be progressive scan and that might solve the problem. It could also be that the discs themselves were mastered with an interlaced pic, and if that's the case, you're probably SOL.
Here's info on what's causing it:

I'm currently using a Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD player connected with an HDMI cable. And the TV is LCD.Neon Maniac wrote:It could be a number of things. I'm guessing your TV is LCD, right? What DVD player do you have and how is it connected to the TV?
This is what I'm guessing. And judging by this review of Family Guy presents Blue Harvest, I'm assuming it's a problem with most animated TV-DVDs.Neon Maniac wrote:What's happening is, either the DVD or the DVD player is sending the image to your LCD TV as an interlaced image, which is causing what you describe. I also just dug up this link which has a good visual comparison between progressive and interlace.

The HD-A3 does a poor job handling interlaced SD-DVD material.

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan
