The Road

Anyone else see The Road?

I saw it the other night and really liked it, bleakness and all.

I read it and saw it. How about that?!

I thought the movie was pretty good, and I don't want to sound like a cliche, but the book was better. Only because it went much deeper into the reality and bleakness of their situation. It never explained what the disaster was that happened either.

What do you think the disaster was?
Spoiler:
I think it was something like the Yosemite supervolcano. I think this because of the ash everywhere, and then that night they have to start moving because of the fire off in the distance. I think they walking to stay ahead of the lava flow.

I don't want to read your spoiler if it says what the disaster in the book is. :(

Does he write The Road like he did No Country? Sans quotes and shit. Because then I'll read your spoiler. I tried to read No Country but stopped. What he does isn't artsy. It's stupid and frustrating.

No, the book never says either. Aside from not having all the same encounters as the book, the encounters it does have being a bit different, and the climax being different, the movie is fairly close to the book. Feel free to read the spoiler.

I never read Old Country, but punctuation and quotes aren't really abounding in The Road. It actually was pretty easy to read, and the lack of the quotations in this one did fit the book very well. It's all very bleak and hopeless. The lack of punctuation kind of punctuates (ha!) the fact that no matter what the father and son say or do, it's all pretty much meaningless and worthless.

That is actually a good explanation of it. One that I didn't think about at the time.

I misread the post. :(

I like that explanation.
Spoiler:
That would explain why everything was still standing, but at the same time destroyed. It didn't really look like a nuclear wasteland.
I may give the book a go after I get caught up with review books. Is it in the library by chance?

I want to read No Country badly, but is writing style really irritates the fuck out of me.

It should be in the library. The book goes a long way to show it was not a nuclear war, it was definitely a natural disaster of some kind. Nobody knows what it was, because whatever happened was so huge that once it happened communication was down really fast.

The Road was pretty cool. A bit bleak for me, but had some cool moments. Some of them felt like fillers, but sometimes I guess you need that to fill the gaps.

Yep thats the one. Road was dismal and just plain hard to watch at times but the realism was very well done.

I liked Book of Eli a lot more than I thought I would. I think mainly because I heard so many bad things.

The book bored the shit out of me so I don't want to check out the movie.

I also thought Book of Eli was pretty boring.
