Nope, definitely not the first CG character. Don't know where you got that.
Looker 1981: First CGI human character, Cindy. Also, first use of 3D shaded CGI

If you're not picky about humans or 3D, you can go back to the 60's.

If you want to split hairs. Max Headroom won a BAFTA in 1985, I believe before YSH hit the screen.

I read it in the trivia on IMDb:
First feature film to have a completely CGI character: the knight coming out of the stained glass window. Industrial Light and Magic animated the scene.

They mention this in the documentary about ILM too, as well as showing the scene.

I actually always thought it was too until I looked it up yesterday. I guess the distinction of 'photorealistic' on that wiki makes the difference or something.

This Steven Spielberg-produced film (with effects by Pixar when it was still part of LucasFilm and Industrial Light and Magic) was noted for having, arguably, the first fully 3-D digital (or CGI), or computer generated, photorealistic animated character in a full-length feature film. It was also the first computer-animated character to be scanned and painted directly onto film using a laser.

[Some have argued, however, that the first CGI 'character' was the polyhedron character "Bit" in Tron (1982).]

This film was the first to composite computer-generated animation with a live-action background.
The last sentence is, I guess, how most perceive CGI. It's down to semantics on how you define the phrase really. Computer Generated Imagery would technically be any image (it doesn't mention animation) generated by computer, so we could probably go back further than Konstantinov's Kitty.

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan
