Meet the last Van Helsing

Luke Rutherford's life as a normal teenage boy is thrown upside down when Rupert Galvin, his godfather, reappears after 17 years and informs him that he is the last Van Helsing: the scion of a dynasty of warriors engaged in a battle between Half-Lives and humans.

Watched the first episode of this last night. Not a bad little rip-off of Buffy (but with a male lead and not so heavy on the Vampires). Most notable (for AR at least) is Philip Glenister as American Rupert Galvin. Watching the trailers I didn't think I was going to be able to accept him playing a Yank after he immortalised Gene Hunt so well in Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes, but after the first few minutes he was as American as Mom's Apple Pie and NAMBLA. The lead guy, who plays Luke, is a bit pretty-boy for my liking but did a halfway decent job.

Worth if you fancy something to watch.

I watched this last night. I have to say I did like it. It is so blatantly a Buffy rip-off though. As I commented on BPR, The girls on the show should be attractive, but there is just something wrong enough to turn down the cute/hotness. I don't know what exactly, but something just ruins it. Philip Glenister is the British Ray Liotta, in acting and in skin. And Mackenzie Crook does a fantasticly creepy AIDS-inflicted David Bowie. I was surprised to see him in the show. The ending shot of the episode was the ultimate in cheese though.

The girl who plays Mina Harker was in another series recently, Survivors, and she was way hotter. I know what you mean, I can't put my finger on it either.

Undecided.

It's not that I don't like him in the role, it's just he does some things (like holds his mouth a certain way when he says some things) that grates on me... and they reminded me instantly of Liotta.

So this week's episode was pretty good; less Buffy and more it's own identity (although they're training Luke in chop-socky just like the Buffster). Mina Harker is hot. Ruby isn't.
