The Facts of Life About 80's Racism

Post by Neon Maniac »

I'm watching The Facts of Life, and it's the episode where Joe's dad wants her to visit him for his birthday while he's in prison. Most of you remember that her dad is played by Alex Rocco, who played Moe Greene in the Godfather, and pretty much played Moe Greene in every role he ever did after that. So she's talking to Mrs. Garrett about how she's embarassed by her dad and that if the other girls knew he was in prison they would make fun of her...

...and that Blair would think of her like she thinks of 'boat people'. :shake:

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan

I've had this show on for a couple of weeks now while I work, and I absolutely hate it. Seriously, every other show is about how it's okay that Tootie's black.

Today the Eastland Academy is removing books from the library because they contain a lot of old racist content. Mrs. Garret and Natalie get in trouble because they want to keep the racist books in the library. Mrs. Garret is almost fired, Natalie loses her position as the editor of the school paper.

This show is racist as fuck.

They never named any titles, that would've been too controversial, I'm sure. They tried to get Tootie to get her parents involved as they're lawyers apparently, and Tootie was like no, that's not something my parents would do... but then at the end, they are involved. Because Tootie always gets taken advantage of by the white people.

Where was Jo in all this you ask? She works for the newspaper and was Natalie's crony in this. Blair? Not really buying into any of this but then peer pressure into getting her mom involved who then rounds up all the parents in her limo and makes them go to Eastland to make sure the books stay there. Rounding up people and forcing them to do things seems to be something Blair's family excels at.

God. Blair's mom is probably Tipper Gore when she led the PMRC.

I'm sure that's another episode coming up at some point. And I bet this time since it's going to be rock music, aka black music, Mrs. Garret is going to agree that it needs warning labels. Because so far it's okay to have racist books in the library, but music that sounds scary but isn't racist needs to go. And once again I bet Tootie's going to be caught in the middle and she'll be pressured into something.

And JFC, don't even get me started on Bewitched. Larry Tate was walking around calling their Japanese client an oriental.

I love how Tootie is basicaly FoL's "I'm not a racist, see, I have this black friend right here." And point to Tootie, who's in the room.

Do they ever have a special episode about Natalie's weight? I feel like they did. And then, at the end of the day, they learned that body shaming is bad. :(

No, this is pre-body shaming. Everyone knows Natalie's fat, and the episodes they have about that are about how it's bad to say that she's fat because she's got a great personality. So the bad guys are the boys who say they won't date her because she's fat, just like there are boys who won't go out with Tootie because she's black or Jo because she's poor. So it's okay not to date them for any of those reasons, but it's bad to say that's why you won't date them. Polite people will just say no thanks, not no thanks fatty.

I think they do one show a year about Natalie being fat and every time Blair says it's okay because she accepts her for who she is. Basically Natalie, Tootie and Jo have their Fat, Black and Poor problems, but it's okay because the hot rich white girl Blair still thinks they're good people.

I'd date Jo even if I had to support her. She could fix my car.

You would have to support her, because she's poor :(

And she wouldn't fix your car, she'd say she would, and that she needed $120 for parts, but then you'd see her all methed up and know what she spent it on, because that's what poor people do. They can't help themselves. That's what Blair told me anyway.
