The Target H (The Penetrator Book 1) by Chet Cunningham

Image

Introducing Mark Hardin, "The Penetrator," at war against the L.A. heroin trade.

Mark Hardin... He'd learned how in Vietnam: Infiltrate the enemy's position, determine the plan of action and then strike swiftly, taking out as many key men as possible, wreaking destruction, leaving chaos in your wake.

He is a new breed of warrior, without uniform, without rank - dedicated to the American way of life, and pledged to fight anyone who seeks to destroy it. On either side of the law. That's why he's in Los Angeles. Just the beginning of a long and lonely series of brush fire wars.

I'm thinking I might make one to keep in the trunk of the car though. Might be nice to have hot water if I ever have to watch a Matthews compound for 3-4 days hoping to get the drop on Sergio Frenchi. - Neon Bolan

Okay, I've read the first 3 chapters of this.

I'd love to say it's not what I thought it was going to be at all, but I can't

No idea where you are, so:
Spoiler:
If there really were all these bad ass vietnam vets kicking ass against the mob for various reasons, the mob would've been over by 1977.

What a goofy set up. So there was a car crash, with the professor's niece, and the guy who caused it was in the mob? That's what started all of this?

And what kind of asshole mobster takes a ferrari down a dirt rutted logging road? I'm not buying that one for a second. He would've gotten a truck or something, even if he had to buy or borrow it. Nobody's going take that car down a logging road when they could spend $1000 (back then) on a decent pickup.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

Oh, and...
Spoiler:
Big surprise that the bad guy is british! You know who I'm just going to assume "His Lordship" is? You already know the answer.
This book also needs giant crabs.

With a 1L 4 cylinder engine offering 100 horsepower, the 1972 Mazda rx3 was what you would call a shit box.

The Beretta .380. It should be a Beretta 88 Cheetah, I believe.

Image

You will notice it is basically a small version of the classic Beretta 92FS 9mm. It's my own opinion that the author made a mistake and really meant the Beretta 87 Cheetah 22 LR, which was the same size and looked exactly the same, but .22lr was the round that Mafia hit men supposedly carried, for one of the reasons the book we're reading describes. The .380 was too loud to easily silence and too powerful to stay in the body at close range,

This is just a general statement, but it definitely applies here. One of my favorite things about these dumb books is how over the top MANLY they try to be. EVERYTHING 'tough' is there. He smokes MARLBOROS. He shoots a BERETTA THREE EIGHTY. He LETTERED in EVERYTHING.

I just snicker because this shit gave 15-year-old me a hardon.

Also, the editing in this Kindle book is awful.

Yeah, you just have to deal with the editing. It's awful. No breaks between scenes so it's a bit odd at first but then you just begin to assume that it's changed

Holy fucking shit. They didn't even bother to go with something different than the mob. Was the mob the only bad guys in the '70s?

Love that the heroin dealer is the Chinaman and the guy who's healing him is an Indian. My god, they are doing all the racist cliches.

This would have NEVER been written today. The author would be gone, fast and furious.

Speaking of Indian, of course the main character is found to be part Cheyenne. Of course.
