Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.

The painting featured in the movie at the beginning is titled, "The Triumph of Death". It was painted by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, c. 1562, and is currently in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

In one of the first few cutaways of Stanley barking into the woods you can see a person's arm slightly appear and then hide behind a tree again. This was more than likely a member of the crew there to enable Stanley's barking for the shot.

The pickup truck used in the film initially has the branding on the front grille worn away/blacked out. But when Paul later returns to his house with Will's family, the grille badge has mysteriously returned.

Given the family's fear of discovery, why would they light fires at night or in the early evening when they would be seen from many more miles away than in the daytime is never explained.
