Insanitarium

Insanitarium - 4/5

Image

From Jeff Buhler, the writer of Midnight Meat Train, comes Insanitarium, the best zombie movie you've never seen. Remember the first time you saw From Dusk Till Dawn? How half way through the movie, the storyline just radically changes into something totally off-the-wall and unexpected? Well the same thing can be said for Insanitarium. I'm not going to lie... the story is a bit contrived and implausible, and the very end is a bit of a letdown, but if you slog through the rather slow paced first 1/2 hour, you will be rewarded with torn arms, beheaded cats, cleavers in faces, huge blood soaked breasts, cannibalized genitalia, self-intestine devouring, frontal lobotomizing, balls-to-the-wall, fun-filled splatterfest. The lead, Jessie Metcalfe (apparently some stud from Desperate Housewives) is quite solid in this, playing Jack, a young man who pretends to be insane in order to break his sister out of a twisted asylum run by a mad doctor (the always creepy Peter Stormare) who experients on the inmates with a drug called orphium that eventually turns them into flesh-eating psychopaths. OK, so they aren't quite zombies in the Romero sense of the word, but they sure as fuck act like them, with their bloodthirsty rampage and savage quest for flesh and blood. I hope that all of the horrorphiles around here give it a shot, as I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one.

A pretty funny statement when you consider that he played a bumbling oaf in "The Brothers Grimm", but it still sounds like an entertaining flick.

Didn't he also play a bumbling oaf in "The Lost World" (Jurassic Park 2)?

say what you will, but the guy, regardless of the character he plays, jus inherently is creepy as fuck. I feel like I need to take a shower and wash off his sleaze after watching anything he's been in. he gives me a creepy child molester vibe.

But he also kicked ass in FARGO and played a fantastic version of the devil in Constantine.;)
