Review:

Gordon B. White is an absolute master of the short story and his latest collection, Gordon B. White is Creating Haunting Weird Horrors is a reminder as to why. This is an author who excels at styling his prose, constructing stories piece by piece while using words like building blocks. His stories have filled multiple prestigious publications and his latest collection brings some of his finest to print with several originals in the bargain.

Opening the collection is “One of the Good Ones,” a macabre look at police culture and brutality as several officers stumble across an unexpected situation of the way to a bar. White writes believable, three-dimensional characters but ensures he crafts a story that is as darkly humorous as it is hard-hitting.

“Godhead” is White at his most surreal. More concept than narrative, the tale takes the reader on a strange quest through the corpse of God. White delves into lurid descriptions with positively fiendish glee, and makes sure nothing is sacred or undisturbed. He paints intense and vivid images of traveling through a desolate and divine landscape with an unmistakably deserving twist.

White showcases a love of playful romance in “Paper Wings and Arrow Juice” with one of his best inventions: Feral cupids. When a hapless and well-meaning grandmother tries to play matchmaker, unexpected consequences ensue. This is a fun monster story with intensity and depth, with White clearly having a blast the entire time.

Not a single story in Gordon B. White is Creating Haunting Weird Horrors is wasted, and White showcases a myriad set of talents through each one. As a writer, he is funny, terrifying, heartfelt and bold. What he never is is dull.
