Buffy, Spike, Willow, and Faith are taking the fight to the government after escaping from the internment camp. They’ve uncovered a secret plot to siphon magic away from supernatural beings. It’s up to the Scoobies to put a stop to this and find out the truth as to how far up this goes.

Buffy Season 11 starts with a bang and deals with some issues that parallel some events in today’s headlines. This issue begins with that same furor before devolving into a cartoon once Xander shows up. The first half is all covert action as Buffy leads a small team into a secret facility and finding out what the magic is really being used for. It’s like a supernatural Island of Dr. Moreau. Someone is playing God by splicing normal animals with magic.

The results are painful to look at. None of this can be comfortable for the creatures involved. They look like deformed monstrosities, the unwanted offspring of science and magic. Artist Megan Levens captures that emotion at just the right caliber, walking the line between revulsion and heartbreak. There’s a shark with robot legs and he looks so sad.

Levens nails the character likenesses with the exception of Faith. She comes off as more wholesome and girl-next-door rather than the tough, attitude-filled warrior we know and love.

Although the first half of the comic is in line with the hard-hitting story of the season to date, the second half falls short. Xander goes undercover to look for answers and he might as well have played the Benny Hill theme song the whole time. His jokes are cringe-worthy and fall flat.

Buffy Season 11 is approaching its final chapters and we’re going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. The Scoobies are digging into a conspiracy that goes to the top of the government and puts the entire supernatural community at risk from casual Wiccans and slayers to vampires and demons. We don’t yet know who was behind the attack on San Francisco that started this whole mess, but I’m sure it will be uncovered soon. From the look of determination from Buffy and crew, I almost feel sorry for whoever…or whatever it is.
