Review:

It's been awhile since I've seen John Carpenter's Escape from New York, but it's hard to forget just how badass Snake Plissken is. BOOM! Studios continues the story of the one-eyed tough guy with a new series written by Christopher Sebela and illustrated by Diego Barreto, right where the film left off. Snake has humiliated the President on national television and the police just returned him to to his status of public enemy number one. What follows is a massive action sequence. Escape from New York is like one big popcorn movie, and it's awesome.

Although he's currently America's Most Wanted, you can't help but love Snake. He's sticking it to the man and blowing shit up. The people across the country can't openly support him for fear of police retaliation, but they can certainly look the other way when he drives by. We do love our outlaws. There's a cocky attitude constantly surrounding him. He clearly doesn't care what anyone thinks and he's going to do whatever he wants, regardless of the consequences. If that entails crashing a helicopter and killing a few cops, so be it.

The comic may be called Escape from New York, but Snake's journey is taking him down south, specifically to Florida. Apparently the state has seceded from the union and the residents have created a whole new weird society down there. If any state would have done this, it would definitely be Florida. Are you really surprised? Snake doesn't play by anyone's rules, regardless of how crazy and outlandish they may be, so it's great to see how he interacts with a different authority figure.

Diego Barreto brings the action to life in full effect with his artwork. The opening scene with Snake escaping from...well...New York is so damn exciting. There's a car chase, a gunfight, and then the guy steals a helicopter. There's a two-page battle in the air, with missiles flying every which way. It's a great opener for the series and helps set the tone for the high octane thrills to come. Wow...even I thought that was a cheesy line.

Escape from New York is a balls-to-the-wall action-packed fun ride of a comic. Longtime fans of the film will eat it up and newcomers will instantly fall in love with the bad boy Snake Plissken as he shoots, punches, and explodes his way into your heart.
