Dr. Abe Hurley thinks he's the only person that can see the horrors coming for our world.  A super disease is racing through the population, evolving people at a highly advanced rate and turning them into hideous beasts.  Abe has figured out how to spot the infected and he's trying to stop it before it spreads further, but it might be too late.  He has to take matters into his own hands and he's getting desperate.

Abe's story in Evolution has consumed me.  It is a gripping tale because if it was read on its own, he'd look like a dangerous crazy person.  He's ranting and raving about these monsters stalking him and he even pulls a gun on a co-worker in this issue.  If we didn't know about these creatures popping up in other areas of the world, it would be fascinating to see how this all plays out with just Abe.

His scenes are particularly disturbing this time around and artist Joe Infurnari wastes no time creeping us out.  Our first glimpse of the infected comes while Abe is examining a patient during a routine visit.  Over the course of two pages, the man slowly transforms into a hideous beast.  It starts small, with the spot on his back where Abe's stethoscope touches mutating into malleable flesh that grips it in place.  Then the side of his face opens up to reveal jagged teeth.  It culminates in the man's body practically tearing itself apart.  This is an impressive and terrifying example of body horror and it happens within the first three pages of this book.

Jordan Boyd's colors add to this unsettling imagery as the new parts that spring up out of the patient are a sickly red.  They look infected and unnatural, like they were made of pure sinew and strewn with blood.  This contrasts with the sickly skin that's left over.  This guy is creepy enough as it is, but the total package will make you run for the hills.

As if that wasn't enough, we check in with Hannah's story as she looks into the suicide of an infected man at her monastery.  She's traveling to his hometown to look for answers and time is of the essence, as the disease is starting to change her.  In even more frightening body horror, she has a flare-up that causes her shoulder to basically explode out in red tendrils.  Hannah desperately tries to cut it away in a sequence that will make you cringe.

Finally, we get a glimpse of the larger force behind this disease and it's just as alarming as it's ever been.  This group has been shrouded in secrecy since Evolution began and we still don't know much about them, however every time they come up, it is a shocking scene that re-ignites my interest in the book.  I'm dying to learn more about them and what they're up to.

Evolution has solidified its place as a top-tier horror comic that will get under your skin.  There are aspects of it that send a shiver up my spine just thinking about.  Infurnari's artwork strikes a great tone filled with dread that permeates through every single page.  The writing dream team of James Asmus, Joseph Keatinge, Christopher Sebela, and Joshua Williamson has crafted something truly terrifying here.
