Scientists opened a portal to another dimension (Earth Two), where the monsters rule with Godzilla in charge. Before the humans can return back to their own dimension, a monster called King Ghidorah enters their portal! Godzilla was brought over to kill Ghidorah, but now he is unleashing all kinds of crazy!

The scientists create an army of mechagodzillas to take on the real one, but they are going down pretty fast. They have one last hope: bringing a dead Ghidorah back to life as a machine to fight for them. Before that can even happen, scientists in Earth Two open their own portal to let through even more monsters!

Writer Joshua Fialkov is really pushing the idea of Earth One dying in Godzilla: Oblivion #4. The scientists of Earth One have come up with back up plans for their back up plans, and nothing seems to be working. It’s almost understandable, though, that the people from Earth Two sent their monsters over. This portal presented a chance for them to gain back control of their world. They sent an apology, but ultimately this is turning into Earth One vs Earth Two rather than Godzilla vs Ghidorah.

The script, while insanely dramatic, has some humor in it for comic relief. Jokes here and there about someone stating the obvious or the constant “this is your fault” argument between Mr. Talbert and Ishiko lift some of the stress, but there is still an overwhelming tone of urgency. The caution of impending doom makes Fialkov’s characters interact really well; all of their actions depend on bouncing ideas off one another. I don’t even communicate that well with people in the real world.

Brian Churilla’s illustrations aren’t particularly detailed, but they do show quite a bit of expression nonetheless. From Ishiko’s concerned eyebrows to Talbert rolling his eyes at her, we see what each character feels exactly when they feel it. As for the monsters, however, every scale, every movement, every emotion is shown really well.

The cliffhanger at the end of this issue literally puts every force against Earth One. What I love about these new monsters, though, is how Churilla pencils them. There are creatures looking like butterflies to crocodiles to the Abominable Snowman, and so much more! It’s a lot to take in, but these designs are the definition of imagination, utilized. If nothing else, this one page is the reason I’ll read the final issue.

I can’t wait to see how everyone handles even more monsters. Things are looking grim for Earth One, but with a new lead scientist, maybe they have what it takes to save their world once and for all.
