When we last left this unlikely trio, Vampirella had been stabbed by the Blood Queen, forcing Cassie Hack and Vlad to fight off a number of demonic goons before making their escape. They have to regroup before heading into the final battle with the Blood Queen, but will they be able to stop her before she’s able to call forth the dark god Chaos?

After reading Hack / Slash vs. Vampirella, I want to see Rapha Lobosco draw everything. His style is awesome and it’s a perfect fit for both of these characters. He captures the brazen attitude of Cassie and the sleek sexiness of Vampirella, not to mention the quiet monster of Vlad. This is particularly true for facial expressions, especially on Cassie. You can tell that she’s a girl used to getting her hands dirty.

All of this personality on display is amplified with Chris O’Halloran’s colors. This issue takes place at night and it’s colored in a cool, blue tone. It’s also in the Nevada desert, so it looks like there’s a sunrise perpetually on the horizon. This flips to the other side of the spectrum once the fighting starts, with bright reds ripped right out of an exploitation film, intensifying the battle.

The clash of character between Cassie and Vampirella fuels this series. They both want the same thing and are fully capable of fighting off all sorts of monsters. They just approach it in very different ways. Cassie is all anger, like sticking your finger in a light socket. Vampirella is a bit more reserved, although Cassie brings out her meaner side. They end up bickering just as much as they’re kicking ass.

Hack / Slash vs. Vampirella pulls in the best parts of both characters. It’s a great crossover that I hope continues with further adventures because it’s created a fun dynamic. It’s sure to please fans of either franchise.
