Review:

Little Cherry just wants to have fun. She’s all alone and desperately wants a friend, but everyone she meets ends up a bloody and/or burnt mess. Oh, I forgot to mention that Cherry is the Devil’s granddaughter and an adorable little grim reaper.

Hellicious gets off to a super fun, cartoonish start. Cherry is witness to some horrific deaths as she shows up moments before someone shuffles off this mortal coil. Artist Kit Wallis captures the mayhem in the most brutal way possible. The gore isn’t sickening or anything. Instead, it’s way over-the-top with so much blood.

The various personalities featured throughout this book are hilarious. The very premise offers a never-ending stream of new people as Cherry ushers in the recently deceased. We get a wide variety of these folks, ranging from a know-it-all hipster to a Bible-thumper to an Easter Bunny with his face ripped off. Did I mention how over-the-top the gore is?

If Cherry wasn’t in Hell, she’d be your average rambunctious kid in a sitcom. Her mom is a workaholic who wants Cherry to follow in her footsteps. Her grandfather is basically a laid-back hippie, but instead of getting high and relaxing, he messes up people’s data usage and melts their chocolate. The adults in Cherry’s life don’t pay enough attention to her, so she’s looking for a buddy.

Jio Butler’s colors in Hellicious are on point. The fires of Hell light up the vibrant colors of the demons walking around. This could be a cartoon with the impressive palette on display.

Micah Myer’s letters complete the package with some dynamic fonts, changing based on the character and circumstance. For example, there’s a scene where Cherry is lamenting to her grandfather about her current situation and she rambles on and on. Certain words pop out while others fade into the background, which is exactly how the Devil picks up everything, only understanding a portion of what was said.

Hellicious is like I Hate Fairyland set in Hell. It has the same level of crazy and hilarious humor with super fun artwork and a breakneck pace. This is tailor made for any horror fan with a dark sense of humor. Writers A.C. Medina and Mina Elwell are on to something great here.
