Review:
At long last, Izzy and the other witches have found their powers again. They've managed to keep this from the prying eyes of their husbands as they figure things out. The men know something is going on, but they're distracted by a visit from their big boss, Mr. August. Everything comes together in a dinner party that's sure to be more than a little explosive.
I have waited for this moment since Hex Wives began. I will say that we don't get the full revenge we're due just yet. That looks like it will play out in the next issue. Instead, writer Ben Blacker steadily builds up the anticipation. I turned every page hoping to see these horrible men torn apart by the witches. While we don't get that, that doesn't take away from the quality of this book. Blacker pulls you deeper and deeper into the lives of these women, so that when you hit the last page, you'll immediately call your comic shop and demand to know when the next issue comes out.

When the magic does come out, it's a glorious display of love and energy, which is a little funny, as it can only be triggered when blood is spilled. Colorist Marissa Louise makes these panels stand out in bursts of purple and pink, like the world changes when Izzy and the others tap into their abilities. It's like their lives up until this point have been nothing but a haze and that's been lifted when they touch magic.
You can see this change in their faces as well. They can see clearly for the first time in as long as they can remember. Artist Mirka Andolfo captures that look of wonder and excitement, mixed with a pinch of fear. Think about what you love most in this world and the feeling you had when you first discovered it. Whether that's your children, a musical instrument, or your favorite game or TV show, that is something that changed your life forever. That is exactly what they're going through right now.
Contrast that feeling of awe with the one of uneasiness from the men. It's like night and day. They're worried and angry. Why can't these women just stay in their lane and do what they're told? They have the look of people used to being in charge and anyone that dares question that is quickly brushed off. Louise has some great use of shadow in some of the more ominous scenes, showing some of the men, especially Izzy's husband, peering through the darkness.

As much as the men have been in control for most of Hex Wives, their hold over the women has been tenuous. You have to wonder how these weaselly jerks kept these powerful women in check. They're doing this out of rage and that shows towards the end of this issue. Letterer Josh Reed delivers a single line in the most intimidating fashion possible, bolding the outline of the word balloon in a specific spot to emphasize the vulgarity and strength of a specific phrase. This panel draws a line in the sand between the men and the women and I can't wait to see how they all cross it.
Hex Wives has built up to this exciting point where I'm practically shaking from anticipation. These men have gaslit some strong witches, stifling their natural abilities and relegating them into a role of glorified maids and chefs. That will not stand. Now that the cracks are showing, I am eagerly awaiting the moment where they smash everything to pieces.
