Gilad has proven that he's willing to go to great lengths to protect Tama, the Earth's Geomancer. He's lost a hand doing it and made a deal with a demon, but is it enough to save Tama's life from the necromancer Imperatrix Virago? He's failed Geomancers before. Those failures are just part of the fuel that pushes Gilad on. Fortunately, this time he's joined by Doctor Mirage and she's no stranger to fighting demons.

In his desperation to save Tama, Gilad receives a carrion-bloom from a demon in the Dead Side. This is a super dangerous idea. Tama is tied directly to the Earth and he's going to use necromancy to bring her back from the brink. Imagine what that could do to the world. We see a bit of what this might be in Incursion #4, but it looks like this is something that might be addressed in future comics. For now, we get one helluva fight between good and evil.

Artist Doug Braithwaite mixes sci-fi with horror in this issue. Imperatrix Virago is an alien necromancer, so that very concept blends the two genres. She is pushed to her limits here and it shows. Bruises are cover her body and blood is pouring through her teeth. This is a fierce warrior watching everything she's fought for about to fade away thanks to a stubborn man and a woman who can speak to the dead.

As the battle progresses and Imperatrix Virago's power begins to fade, her appearance gets more sickly. It's like her very essence is sucked away, leaving a husk of the strong being that once invaded Earth ready to consume all life. Her true form is revealed and it's just as ugly as her actions.

Letterer Marshall Dillon gives Virago a sinister voice with dark grey word balloons. Her words send a shiver up your spine as she tries a last ditch effort to stay alive.

Colorists Diego Rodriguz and Leonardo Paciarotti add a gritty quality to Incursion #4. Blood is smeared across nearly everything. This is not a clean fight. It's one made in the dirt and shadows. It's interesting to see how Mirage's sword and her husband cut through this darkness like a bright light of hope, yet they come from death.

Incursion is another solid event from Valiant Entertainment. The book is as epic and important as any big, summer blockbuster comic series, yet self-contained and focused so it really packs a punch. This is something that will stand the test of time and its effects will be felt for ages. Incursion sets the next phase into motion for the Geomancer, the Eternal Warrior, and Doctor Mirage and based on how this wraps up, it's going to be an exciting and terrifying time.
