Becka has a hardcore crush on Kim. She’s been staring at her in class to creepy levels. When she finally gets up the nerve to ask Kim out on a date, she finds out her crush is a part time Grim Reaper, usher souls into the afterlife to help pay for college. What better way to get to know when another than with a little reaping?

Writer / artist Sarah Graley brings a real slice of life to the awesomely named Kim Reaper. Becka goes through a number of emotions that everyone has experienced when crushing hard on someone. She just says them all out loud. This can be a little grating at times, but it quickly grows on you. Becka is swooning over this girl and things like logic or basic social norms just don’t apply in that situation.

Graley’s art style complements this well. It gives off a fun vibe that’s cartoony, but not over the top. It’s consistent and never becomes slapstick. I can see this easily translating into an animated TV show, especially with the facial expressions of Kim and Becka.

The character details add to the fun as well. They meet an angry cat-dad who gets more and more ridiculous as you read on. There are elements to his design that you might not notice at first. Then, when they’re pointed out, you can’t not notice them. I found myself going back and double checking if they were always there.

This matches up to the humor in the book which is spot on. It’s not quite a dark comedy, even though it deals with death. Instead, it’s more lighthearted, putting the characters in silly situations that they have to think their way out of. In this case, every time they think they’ve got it, some new wrinkle comes in to instantly destroy that hope in increasingly hilarious ways.

Kim Reaper is more than just a great title. It’s a refreshing take on the idea of the Grim Reaper that’s not all doom and gloom. Instead of a skeleton in a dark robe, it’s a cool goth chick with a scythe and an attitude. You can see why Becka is so interested in her.
