Kim has been kidnapped by her boss, the Grim Reaper, and taken to the underworld. Her girlfriend, Becka has picked up a scythe of her own to go rescue her along with her best friend Tyler. They're going to have to get through a nightmare realm to do so and that means facing their greatest fears including dogs, bugs, and dogs made of bugs.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Kim Reaper is a fun, quirky comic. Writer / artist Sarah Graley plays with the tropes of the horror genre without dealing too much with blood and gore. There is most definitely a place for comedy in horror and you need no better example than this book.

Take the dog made of bugs for instance. The fact that Becka's greatest fear is an adorable puppy is absurd enough, although I can get behind that as I'm totally a cat person. Having it made of bugs is this spooky yet hilarious additional touch. We go from this cute, happy dog to a writhing mass of creepy crawlers. There's this great shot of the dog's face as it slowly gets covered in bugs.

The facial expressions on Becka and Tyler help with the overall comedy. They've gotten over the fact that they're in a nightmare world and this is what they have to deal with. They're more annoyed and angry than anything else. What do you mean all this candy is going to turn into snakes and tentacles? Are you kidding me?! Come on!

Crank's letters reinforce this feeling as Becka and Tyler piece together their current predicaments. Their dialogue gets bigger in larger word balloons and font as they get more and more upset about this nightmare realm.

At the heart of Kim Reaper is this fun young relationship between Kim and Becka. They're still figuring this out, but they definitely care a lot about one another. They get jealous about other friends and work stuff and that gets a little more heated because Kim works as a grim reaper, essentially killing people. That adds to the quirky quality of the book.

Kim Reaper: Vampire Island is a great comic that pokes fun at some of the sillier elements of the horror genre. It has a quick pace and never stops being hilarious. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the bizarre lives of these characters as they get into such strange and humorous antics. I really hope we get more from them soon.
