Ari was on the run when the sorcerer Roman Black took her in. Her problems are not over though. The rogue magicians who were chasing her are still hot on her trail and now she has a new set of enemies in the form of Roman's family, jealous of this newcomer and her connection to the patriarch of the Black clan.

Manor Black is filled to the brim with dread. Writers Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt establish an unsettling tone from page one and never let up. This issue begins with a dream sequence of sorts as Ari recounts an experience with a mysterious and frightening being known as the Stranger. This guy is creepy in every possibly way. You immediately understand that he's a very real threat.

Artist Tyler Crook distinguishes this scene from the rest of the book with a black-and-white hue. Things are faded, like we're sifting through Ari's memories. That changes when the Stranger shows up. Blood and fire follow and it pops on the page with all the mayhem they represent. The colors in this sequence are gorgeous and further show when Crook is an absolute master.

This burst of energy is associated with the use of magic. Under normal circumstances, Manor Black is set in a completely normal town with nothing out of the ordinary. When someone taps into magic, everything changes. The page explodes with color and life.

The intrigue at play in Manor Black is riveting. Seeing Roman's kids bicker about their lineage and their inheritance is like watching Game of Thrones...but you know...without a horrible ending. You just know there's going to be a whole lot of backstabbing coming up and these folks cannot be trusted. It's no wonder Roman went outside his kin to find someone he could will his power to.

Ari and the Black family represent half of Manor Black. The other half comes with the newly appointed Sheriff Washington. He got the job after the last sheriff literally burst into flames. His eyes have been opened to the possibility of something supernatural and he can't quite close them now. We're seeing him start down this path that there's no return from. It's bad enough that he's in over his head, in a position that he never thought he'd be in. Now he has all this to contend with.

Manor Black is a fascinating and chilling comic. This is a gripping read that will grab you and never let go. All the players are orbiting one another and it's only a matter of time before they come together in a big, bad way. This is awesome.
