Humanity seems to have a tough spot in a lot of epic battles.  If it's not giant robots waging a war that's been going on for centuries, it's two races of immortal beings using humans as slaves.  Such is the case for Monocyte, the latest from artist, Menton3.  The world of Monocyte is a desolate one.  It's a horrid future for planet Earth where death has no meaning and time is no longer relevant.

The concepts brought up in Monocyte can be a little heady.  Fortunately, co-authors Menton3 and Kasra Ghanbari have provided a couple quick pages to sum up each race, the Olignostics and the Antedeluvians.  The former rose to prominence utilizing technology to obtain immortality.  Meanwhile, the latter has been around for ages, weaving through history as we know it.  There's also a free 8 page prologue that can be found here that gives a bit more insight into the setup for the series.

The title character is an old one-eyed necromancer, summoned by Death to do his bidding.  It is very clear from his introduction that Monocyte is one powerful being.  He's often portrayed above others within each panel, casting his shadow down upon others that tremble before him.

While the story is just getting started, Menton3's art is more than enough to seal the deal.  It is incredible.  The character of Monocyte is something that will haunt my nightmares for weeks after reading through this issue.  Menton3's style seems to move subtly between a stark painted look and a dreary sketch work reminiscent of Ben Templesmith.  It compliments the story very well and helps elevate it to a more epic scale.

This first issue of a four-issue series provides some basic ground work, but leaves a lot of questions to pull you in for more.  Monocyte is just getting going and there are lots of people that have been cheating death for far too long.  This is a new and improved grim reaper and he's a helluva lot scarier than that robed guy with the scythe.

This is a creator owned book from a smaller publisher.  If you want to check out Monocyte (which you should), ask your local comic shop to order it for you.  These types of books live or die based on the orders that come in from local shops.
