Review:

Nancy is in Hell. You probably figured that out from the title. It is rather self-explanatory. Anyway, Hell is a long road, literally. It stretches out as far as the eye can see with nothing but open desert on either side. Armed with her trusty chainsaw, Nancy basically picks a direction and starts moving. Trouble always finds her though. She's not to be underestimated, especially with that chainsaw. It turns out you can still die in Hell and it can be so very bloody.

This is the third or fourth installment of Nancy in Hell. I read some of the earlier volumes, but I don't know the full story behind Nancy or why she's in Hell. That would certainly provide some additional context, but it's not necessary to jump into this series. Writer El Torres gives us more than enough information by dropping us into this world.

It's impossible not to fall in love with Nancy. She has a bit of an attitude and can more than hold her own. She's tried to get rid of her chainsaw, but it just keeps coming back. It has become her anchor in Hell and it quickly proves to be a very handy item to have. Nancy is incredibly proficient with it, hacking and slashing her way through attackers and zombies. The chainsaw cuts through flesh like a hot knife through butter.

There is something so very awesome about a beautiful woman wielding a chainsaw, and Nancy in Hell delivers that in spades. Artist Abel Cicero delivers just the right amount of camp. Nancy is clad in a tight tank top and very short cut-offs that leave little to the imagination. Although she is very sexy, she's never shown as vulnerable. She'd cut your head off if you looked at her the wrong way.

You'd expect fire and brimstone in a comic like Nancy in Hell. That's nowhere to be seen. Instead, we have this vast wasteland with the hot sun beating down on anyone and everyone. Alexandra Thone's colors practically make you squint with how bright everything is. Thone really excels in the blood. The crimson liquid stands out on the page against the brilliant yellows of the light and the grimy browns of the desert. Every scene with blood really pops.

The more intense scenes are amplified by the lettering from Monkey Typers. You can feel the pain and anguish from a victim as his arms are sliced off by a swing of Nancy's chainsaw. This guy lets out a guttural scream of agony. It's perfect.

Nancy in Hell builds on an overarching narrative while also starting something new and exciting that's accessible to new readers. It's a grindhouse story with the right balance of gore, attitude, and sex appeal. Hell is not ready for Nancy.
