What do you do after you take out the legendary Beowulf? For Bridgette, she retires back to the old folks home for some calming TV and a night in...until the Grendel shows up to complete that classic poem. The monsters she's used to fighting strike where she calls home, putting her and all the other elderly residents in immediate danger...unless her grandson Duncan can get there in time.

Once & Future continues to grow and evolve. It started with just the story of King Arthur, put through a horrific lens for a modern age then expanded into other areas of folklore like Beowulf. Writer Kieron Gillen handles this well, increasing the size and scope of this tale while maintaining the interesting dynamic between Bridgette and Duncan at its center. That's what has really driven the story.

This issue has Bridgette's everyday world meeting her life as a supernatural hunter. Colorist Tamra Bonvillain plays a major part in this, designating the nursing home as this quaint building of normalcy that is slowly invaded by the forces of another land. Whenever magic or monsters come in, the palette changes. This affects the mood and tone of the story in such a great way.

Artist Dan Mora is an absolute superstar and Once & Future #10 is another perfect example of this. The Grendel is a hulking beast with rows of razor sharp teeth. It is fully capable of tearing your throat out without a second thought. The other residents are so innocent in all this, so the tension rises steadily as the monster begins its hunt. They are completely defenseless...aside from Bridgette. She's the only one that can do something to stop this, but even her experience may not be enough to put this thing down.

Letterer Ed Dukeshire gives the Grendel a monstrous voice as it stalks its prey. This is a great fit for the story and works wonders.

Once & Future is the action-horror epic we need. It has its foundation in old folklore, then raises the stakes with a personal story of family that is nothing short of riveting. This is tense, exciting, and downright terrifying. In short: This is a great comic.
