Gran, Duncan, and Rose have fought monstrous versions of King Arthur, Grendel, and Beowulf. That should be enough, right? The Green Knight rises, wreaking more havoc and bloodshed. There's enough on Duncan's shoulders already, so it's Rose that steps up to face off against this legend made real.

Rose has been in the a background as a distant third wheel in Once & Future for a bit, so it's great to see her play such a big part in this chapter. She's not the Alfred of this story. She's a major player and this issue proves it. She faces down the Green Knight in a fearless manner. Artist Dan Mora makes her look confident and strong even as this monster stands above her, twice her size and clearly capable of ripping her in two.

The design for the Green Knight is a thing of beauty. It has the look of a classic knight, but with a twisted, monstrous vibe. Colorist Tamra Bonvillain uses a bright green color, giving him an almost radioactive quality and certainly adding to its dangerous nature. It's almost like this being has risen out of a witch's cauldron. Letterer Ed Dukeshire adds to this beast with a scratchy font and angular word balloons.

Bonvillain's palette shifts when the supernatural elements come into play. We go from scenes with natural light to those with an eerie, otherworldly look. You can tell when things are going to get crazy from this change in tone. This works well to differentiate the two sides of these characters' lives.

I will admit that I don't know anything about The Green Knight from myths and legends, however that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of Once & Future. Writer Kieron Gillen has pulled us in with compelling characters and an intriguing premise that has only gotten more riveting as its gone on.
