In a house in the quaint village of Hallows' Gate, five teenagers wake up covered in blood with no memory of how they got there. Cryptic notes are written on the walls. There's something unnatural in the house with them and they'll have to stop it before it kills them all and possibly destroys the world itself.

You cannot beat the opening to Our Final Halloween. The image of blood-soaked teenagers standing around a strange symbol carved into the floor hits you hard. Artist Michael Lee instantly sets the stage for a non-stop ride of mystery and terror. These kids go through a range of emotions, going from confused and disoriented to terrified and angry. Remember, their short term memory is gone so they have no idea what just happened in here.

Our Final Halloween takes place in the evening and Lee creates an awesome color palette here. The blood is contrasted well with the cool blues of the night and the soft yellows of what little light is shining in. It's like each of the characters is facing the twilight of their lives and they have to fight their way through it to survive.

Lee also gets creative in the layout for the book with some dynamic panel grids. A real standout is a double-page spread that follows the characters as they explore the rest of the house. It shows the entire building from outside, but with pieces cut out so we can see each room. This gives you a quick idea of how large the house is and all the different rooms where strange monsters could be hiding.

Oh yeah! How could I forget these creepy things that crawl out of that symbol on the ground? These mutant creatures are like slick rats crossed with ants and a million times more disgusting. There's a twinge of body horror here as they twist and contort into different forms in an effort to get under the kids' skins.

Adding to these monstrosities is Mike Stock's sound effects. He uses this jagged font to portray some of the most unsettling sounds. It will definitely make you squirm as you think of them.

Although we don't get much time with these characters, writer Mike Garley gives us a quick idea of their lives and who they are. They don't fit into your typical horror movie stereotypes, which makes us a little more invested in seeing them making it through this ordeal. It helps that I didn't actively want to see any of them horrifically murdered.

Our Final Halloween hits the ground running and never lets up. It's a gripping horror tale filled with suspense and jaw-dropping visuals. More importantly, it's unpredictable. I had no idea where the story was going to go next with every page turn, which made the stunning conclusion all the more satisfying.

Mike Garley is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of Our Final Halloween.
