A group of hikers go out camping in the wilderness only to be attacked by cavemen-like monsters.  That's about all you need to know to get into Peek-A-Boo because a whole bunch of these folks are going to get clubbed to death.  This just reinforces my feelings about camping and going outside in general.  You know how many cavemen will attack me in my home with all its electricity and doors that close and lock?  None.

Anyway, Peek-A-Boo follows the tried-and-true formula of a good slasher movie.  The characters all have names and some rudimentary backstory, but none of that matters.  They check out various boxes in victim stereotype bingo ranging from the ditzy bimbo to the yuppie rich guy to the tough guy.  You get a rough idea of their personalities and form some basic favorites, but in reality, there are a couple of them you don't want to die and the rest of them you want to see horrifically murdered.  That's how these things work.

As terrifying as these monsters are, they're a little light on the murder.  They seem to be more show than anything, running into camp with clubs made of bone and human skulls.  Artist Marcelo Basile gives them a crude design, like they've been mutated by whatever is out here in the wilderness.  They look like a cross between Sloth from The Goonies and an aging goth kid, coupling a demented face with greasy, yet thinning long hair.

One thing that's odd though is they appear to be wearing pants, like normal pants with zippers and pockets.  There have been a few hints as to where these creatures came from, but as with the backgrounds of the non-mutant characters, it's less of a concern.  We're reading Peek-A-Boo for the crazy violence, not a deep introspective on local water pollution.  For now, I'll just assume the monsters are really just looking for the next Gathering of the Juggalos with the Insane Clown Posse.  Whoop! Whoop!

Peek-A-Boo hits the right marks for a slasher story, albeit instead of a machete, these maniacs wields clubs.  The logline for this comic might be Jason meets the Flintstones.  Writer Victoria Rau packs this issue with tension, putting the characters in frightening situations with seemingly no way out.  It's only a matter of time before they're picked off one-by-one.  It's going to be fun to see how it all happens and if any of them make it out alive.
