Review:
Robyn’s new boyfriend German Villaraigosa, might be summoning an ancient demon by committing a bunch of human sacrifices, but no one’s perfect, right? We all have our little quirks. Maybe they can work this out. Probably not. In any case, Robyn and Marian have to work fast to stop German before he makes it rain blood all over San Diego. Maybe she should have tried Plenty of Fish instead.
You know what’s coming in Robyn Hood: The Curse, but it doesn’t make it any less interesting. German’s holding this huge party in a makeshift temple in the heart of the city, gathering everyone who’s anyone in the area. These celebrity parties can get a little crazy, so no one thinks twice when German walks out in a ceremonial Aztec dress, complete with loin cloth.

The chilling element comes in the unwitting woman who volunteers for what she thinks is going to be part of the show. Again, you know what’s coming here as German raises his knife above the sacrificial alter. Artist Julius Abrera captured the sudden shift in tone in the crowd as they go from wide-eyed excitement to absolute terror. They just realized they’re all in danger and things are going to get a lot worse before the night is over.
As if this wasn’t enough, Marian’s partner Sam is out in the city causing trouble, possessed by some sort of demon. This is a dangling plot thread and I’m curious as to how it will be tied up, especially since the main story is such a big deal. Sam’s power seems to be growing and they’re extending to some others, mutating them into demonic creatures.

There are a handful of lame jokes that fall flat in this issue, such as the two stereotypical comic book nerds that fall victim to Sam’s machinations. They’ve popped up a few times throughout this series like a bumbling geek chorus and haven’t added much, if anything, to the story up until this point. Their dialogue is cringeworthy and seems to put down the very people that would be reading the comic.
The penultimate issue of Robyn Hood: The Curse ends with a huge game changer that’s like something you’d see out of a blockbuster monster movie. It makes you wonder how one woman with a bow and arrow could possibly hope to stop such an immense and powerful force. See, if this were Hawkeye, there’s no way. Robyn seems like she’ll stare this thing down before putting an arrow right down its throat and you’d believe it 100%.
