There have been a few weird Avengers teams over the years, but this one might just take the cake. It's certainly the deadliest collection of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. How did Wolverine, Conan, Venom, Elektra, Punisher, and Doctor Voodoo get together? Well, it all started in the mysterious City of Sickles deep in the Savage Land where a cult is sacrificing the best and brightest to summon an ancient god. The pool of blood is getting deeper, but they need more warriors to round it out. This is a pretty strange recipe.

This cult is certainly shadowy and brutal. Its members are pulling out all the stops to accomplish they're goal. Artist Mike Deodato gives us a glimpse as to what this ancient god may look like and it is some chilling stuff. It's a monster of epic proportions, made of bulging muscles and sharp teeth. It helps that it's covered in blood. If this is what is in store for us, it's no wonder you need the fiercest warriors in the Marvel Universe to combat it.

Where Deodato really excels in Savage Avengers #1 is a knock-down, drag-out fight between Conan and Wolverine. These two beat the ever-loving hell out of each other and it's so very awesome. Deodato frames this battle very well, often showing the two figures in silhouette as they hack and slash at each other. Although it's just two dudes fighting with fists, claws, and swords, it feels like an epic showdown of giants.

This fight takes place with the setting sun as a backdrop, creating a beautiful landscape of fire in the sky. Colorist Frank Martin uses this to keep the energy high and then ratchets it down as the sun disappears, giving way to the cool blues of the night.

Letterer Travis Lanham adds to the brutality of this battle with some great sound effect placement. My favorites include the solid “THUNK” of a rock smacked across Conan's face and the gruesome “SLIKK” of a sword digging into Logan's chest. These are shown in ways that amplify the actions.

I will say that I've never been a fan of Conan. I just never really cared for the character. Based on how he interacts with Wolverine here, I might be changing my mind. I'm still not sure where he fits in the overall Marvel Universe though.

What sold me on Savage Avengers is not the epic battle between Conan and Wolverine, it's the final pages where we learn how the Punisher is pulled into this. When we get a first look at it, I was in shock. There's no way they're going there, are they? Then we see the full scope of what has been done and I cannot fathom the hellfire that Frank Castle is going to rain down on these cultists. Obviously, I'm trying not to spoil this, but suffice it to say, this is going to get real bloody, real quick.

Elektra and Venom are shown in one of Marvel's Free Comic Book Day efforts, so we have an idea of how they get on this trail. For now, writer Gerry Duggan has introduced us to the most brutal version of the Avengers yet and it's only getting started. The fact that it's up against murderous cultists is only going to make this all the more gruesome.
