Review:

With the world covered in snow and ice, a family does what it can to survive and stay warm along The Trench. This is always how they've lived. They don't know anything different or how things got so cold. After a routine hunting trip, Milli, Mae, and their father encounter The Snowman, a monster only spoken about in myths and legends...until now. This Snowman is definitely not one that sings or dances.

Snow Angels kicks off its 10-part saga with this debut issue as writer Jeff Lemire and artist Jock firmly establish this world and the horrors that await any within it. You get an immediate sense of just how desolate, cold, and oppressive this place is. Doing something as simple as walking can be tiresome and deadly as you're battling the elements the whole time.

We're left to wonder how the world got this way and that's fine. It adds to the mystery and intrigue of the story. There are a few interesting items that give us a clue as to what happened, such as a hologram showing constellations and a downed robot.

The driving force of Snow Angels is the family. You get the sense that it's these three against the world, even though they live with a few other people in what passes for a village. The father has some secrets and he almost lets one slip, again, planting seeds for the mystery of the past. All of that is behind him though as his main focus is on protecting his daughters.

Much of this issue is spent introducing us to these three. Just as we're comfortable with them, Lemire and Jock yank the rug out from under us, throwing this trio into a bloody tragedy. The red really pops on the page against the white of the snow. It makes for a very shocking final few pages as the Snowman descends.

Letterer Steve Wands gives this thing some frightening sound effects that really up the tension in the scene. You know something is coming by the ominous scratching that surrounds the characters in a suffocating manner until we turn the page and see this being in all its glory. It's a great way to close out the first chapter.

With much of the United States currently dealing with harsh winter storms, Snow Angels hits at a perfect and frightening time. It shows a society sent back to the ice age that is not without its fair share of danger. Through it all, a family tries to make sense of the hand they've been dealt and survive to shiver another day. That is much easier said than done in this thrilling sci-fi tale.
