Archer's Peak has been through hell and its residents are struggling to pick up the pieces. Maybe then they can return to some semblance of normalcy. The thing is, for most of these people, their lives will never be the same again. How do you come back from having to identify your child based on the pieces the cops were able to find? Meanwhile, Erica Slaughter has some supervision from the home office in an effort to eliminate the last monsters from this town by any means necessary.

A cloud of grief and sorrow hangs over Archer's Peak. It's practically tangible as we go through these pages. Colorist Miquel Muerto paints a somber picture for this place. While the world around it makes it look like Anytown, USA, the people there know the truth. It's shown on their faces and on the shadows that surround them. The sun will never shine the same way again.

Artist Werther Dell'Edera does a great job pacing this out. Something is Killing the Children #8 takes some time to get through and for good reason. The pain these people are going through really sinks in. Dell'Edera does these great double-page spreads full of panels, each giving you another detail on the experience. Think of it like a VR game where you can look at everything all around you. No detail is left unchecked as we get a full picture of what's going on.

This allows for a healthy amount of dialogue to come through without it feeling overwhelming or like we're getting an exposition dump. Letterer AndWorld Design places these perfectly, giving each word balloon some added weight based on how it sits in the panel.

While most of Something is Killing the Children #8 deals with the grieving process and the townsfolk trying to make sense of the chaos and bloodshed they've seen in recent weeks, it also serves as a step into the next phase of the series. Writer James Tynion IV give us a chance to catch our breath before ratcheting up the action again by the end of this chapter.

Add to that the mystery of the House of Slaughter and you've got an absolutely riveting comic. This book will pull you in and never let go. I have no earthly idea as to where it's going next and that's certainly part of the enjoyment.
