Review:
With monsters wreaking havoc around the world, it makes sense that Deadpool would find himself in some bizarre situation. That's the case in this Monsters Unleashed tie-in issue, where the Merc with the Mouth is lured to Toronto by a handful of schoolgirl witches looking to resurrect their evil headmistress by calling upon Deadpool's succubus wife. Hey, this is comics, folks. If you're looking for Pride & Prejudice, keep walking. The girls use a spell to conjure up Deadpool's heartmate and instead of his significant other, they get Spider-Man. That's adorable. Then a monster shows up!
Despite loving the movie, I've never been a big fan of Deadpool in the comics. That changes here. It could be the fact that his very existence causes Spider-Man to be the straight man in this comedic duo. His lines come off as irreverent and just plain fun. In my past experience, he's more of a one-note joke that's played way too long. That's not the case in this issue.

If you're following along at home, this issue takes place immediately after Avengers #1.MU. It wastes little to no time getting to the monster action, as one lands conveniently right outside the school. It was bad enough that this pair of heroes had to deal with a few Slytherin girls. Now they have to fight a big eggplant-shaped kaiju.
Artist Tigh Walker did a great job creating a monster that's simultaneously terrifying and yet a little funny-looking. It's like a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a few tentacles popping out of its sides and an extra pair of eyes. Also it's purple. Holy crap, it's like Barney mixed with an octopus. This is just the right kind of beast for Spider-Man and Deadpool to handle on their own. It's probably the one that the other monsters don't take seriously.

Rachelle Rosenberg's colors make the creature pop off the page. We get a gruffer color palette when we see the insides of the kaiju. All of this is in contrast to the white snow covering the city of Toronto.
Spider-Man / Deadpool is the kind of tie-in issue I can get behind. It presents an entirely unique story that I doubt we'll see in the main Monsters Unleashed book. The comic moves at a quick pace and is packed with action and a heaping helping of jokes. There's no slow moment or boring segment. It's just a fun comic.
