The best anthologies are built around a central theme. That's where Survivor starts out. Five stories are all about the topic of surviving, whether that's during an encounter with a demon or literally running for your life. As with most collections like this, there are highs and lows.

The stand out story in Survivor is “New Marathon” from writer Matt Crehan, artist Daryl Gillham, and letterer Toben Racicot. It's set in a dystopian future where a group of runners race across the country seeking aid against a rising empire. Gillham's artwork is exquisitely detailed. The black-and-white motif works well in playing up the hopeless landscape these folks are running through. It's an absolute wasteland.

The final story, “Follow-Up” from writer Mike West, artist Benjamin Filby, and letterer Rob Jones is a quick one-pager that serves as a great way to wrap up an anthology called Survivor. It's a tongue-in-cheek gag that leaves you with a smile on your face.

The other stories in Survivor didn't quite gel for me. The artwork was rough and the plots tended to stop just before they really came together. They're close to something though, so I'm curious what they could have been with a little more polish. There's a chance I missed something, but these are all short stories so there's not a whole lot to them.

There's definitely some potential here as these up-and-coming creators continue to refine their craft. Although this anthology didn't entirely work for me, I'm glad that these folks were able to get this together and out into the world. This book has become a yearly tradition for publisher, Cog Life Comics so I'm curious as to what the next annual collection may hold.

Survivor can be purchased directly from the Cog Life Comics official website.
