Review:

After exploring the lighter side of horror in The Last Halloween, Abby Howard gets into the darker aspects of the genre in The Crossroads at Midnight. This collection of tales explores terrifying possibilities rooted in the real world. Howard pulls no punches either. This is going to scare the crap out of you.

I have never winced as much while reading a comic as I have while going through The Crossroads at Midnight. There were times I literally yelled at this book, such as when the strange flesh creature appears in “Mattress, Used.” That thing is so friggin' creepy that just imagining myself in that situation freaked me out to such an extent that I needed to take a break before continuing.

Howard leans into this feeling. She hooks you with an amazing premise and you have to learn more, even if that means experiencing such anguish in the process. A great example of this is “The Boy From The Sea,” in which you have an idea of what might happen to the young girls in the story, yet you keep going even though it's so very tragic.

Every tale in this collection is tinged with that heartbreaking yet horrifying tone. Howard's artwork matches up to it perfectly, depicting these normal, innocent people as they suddenly encounter something completely out of this world, whether that be a strange voice from behind a fence or a creature lurking in the pond nearby.

Each story could stand on its own as a graphic novella, yet collected here they join together like some kind of horror Voltron, becoming stronger as you read them one after another. There is not a bad tale in this book. They're all terrifying and will shake you to your core. This is some of the scariest stuff I've read in months.
