It's the end of the world as we know it. Humanity's last hope rests in the Gravediggers Union, a ragtag group of soldiers armed with shovels and pitchforks. They must stop the Black Temple cult from killing the ancient space-monkey and bringing about the apocalypse. At the center of this battle is Gravedigger Cole, who is trying one last ditch attempt to get through to his own daughter, the Black Temple prophet Morgan.

This final issue of The Gravediggers Union is non-stop action. This battle is a horror fan's dream. You've got monsters, zombies, cultists, hellfire, and big, Lovecraftian creatures coming up from the ground. It's intense from beginning to end.

The Gravediggers are uniquely suited to handle these threats. I mean, that is their job, but their tools, while basic, get the deed done. They don't need mystical incantations or other fancy stuff. A good shovel will stop a zombie in its tracks. At the end of the day, these are just regular dudes fighting their asses off to protect the world. That's something everyone can get behind.

Artist Toby Cypress draws some incredible horrors in The Gravediggers Union. It's tough to pick a favorite. Is it the horde of the undead, shuffling forward towards the Gravediggers? These decaying corpses are skinny and frail, but they have a numbers advantage that makes them all the more frightening. The zombies let out these haunting groans that hover above the crowd like a dark cloud. I'm not sure if Cypress did these sound effects or if it was handled by letterer Jared K. Fletcher, but either way they're great. Fletcher delivers some solid work across the board.

In this issue, it's probably the tentacled, multi-eyed monster that's looking to destroy humanity. We get glimpses of this creature as it begins to claw its way into our universe. Everything about it is unnatural and terrifying. It should not be.

Colorist Niko Guardia adds some additional terror to this monstrosity. It's often shown in this haze of red, like blood is raining down from the heavens. When we do see it in all its glory, it's a twisting mass of colors, like the human eye has trouble comprehending what its seeing.

Guardia coats most of the battle in this strange fog, like the fires of Hell are casting these weird shadows on everything. It makes for some trippy scenes which works well with the overall story. We are dealing with a space-monkey as the maguffin here, remember?

The Gravediggers Union builds to an impressive climax, followed by a perfect closer that harkens back to the origins of the series in writer Wes Craig's Blackhand Comics. It ends with a very similar scene as shown in that collection. Although they just saved the world, the Gravediggers don't get to rest. There will be more monsters out there. Mankind will never be safe. With the Gravediggers Union on duty, they can at least get some sleep at night while the things that go bump are taken care of.
