Review:

Do you remember in Addams Family Values when Wednesday and Pugsley Addams went to summer camp? Fiona's trip to camp in The Silver Coin #2 has that vibe, but things get a whole lot bloodier in this case. She's the awkward kid who's into horror movies and the mean girls at her cabin pick on her constantly. The joke's on them because she's prepared when a slasher pops up in the woods and starts hacking and slashing away.

The Silver Coin is an anthology title with each issue acting as a stand-alone story, so this issue has nothing to do with the last one aside from the appearance of the title object. Writer Kelly Thompson works quickly to establish this set of characters and their personalities. You instantly understand how Fiona feels at home and at camp. Plus, those mean girls are total assholes. We get maybe two pages into meeting them and we're already wishing they'd all die.

Just as we get settled into this story, Thompson pulls the rip cord on this chainsaw and lets loose. We move at a mile a minute and artist Michael Walsh illustrates some of the most brutal and creative death scenes ever put to paper. I was letting out audible gasps and exclamations while reading this issue. I love how they tie together all of the events of the issue up until that point. It's like a neat little bow covered in blood. The sound effects are pitch perfect here too, amplifying each attack.

Walsh's colors are on point too, moving from the bright lights of the day through basic activities like fishing and archery to darker, more sinister elements. The shadows on the characters' faces during the night scenes are definite highlights, calling upon the feeling of telling ghost stories around a campfire.

There's an interesting effect used when Fiona finds a mysterious cabin out in the woods. The colors take on a different hue that almost blurs the images just a little bit. This gives the artwork a kind of otherworldly tone to it that signals a major shift in the story.

If you have even a passing interest in slasher movies, you are going to love The Silver Coin #2. It pays homage to all the greats, most notably Friday the 13th, while telling something wholly original and satisfying.
