If only someone could have told Herbert West that it was a bad idea to resurrect the ancient gods of death, then he wouldn't be in this sticky situation. They've opened up a portal to Vampirella's home planet of Drakulon, which is pulling through all kinds of harmful radiation, killing people all over the world. The Re-Animator and Vampirella haven't exactly seen eye to eye during this adventure, but they'll have to learn to work together if they want to live to see tomorrow.

You instantly understand the stakes in Vampirella vs. Re-Animator #4 from Blacky Shepherd's artwork. Purple lightning fills the sky in an ominous fashion as these two deities revel in the carnage they've caused. Shepherd uses color sparingly, so when it appears on the page, it stands out. This is the case with the red in Vampi's costume and on her nails and lips. It adds some extra emphasis on certain elements to make them pop.

There's an impressive amount of detail in Shepherd's pencils. You can see the individual wrinkles in West's face and the bulging veins in the death gods. At times it's almost too realistic, so some of the more violent scenes may make you cringe.

The comic is told from the perspectives of both Vampirella and West. Letterer Taylor Esposito differentiates their internal narration with unique styles. West's thoughts are presented more like entries in a diary, with font that resembles hand writing. Meanwhile, Vampi's is shown in black boxes and white letters, harkening to her darker nature.

The action gets pretty heated by the end of Vampirella vs. Re-Animator, as the series closes with an epic battle. We're talking world-shaking stuff here as gods clash with the entire human race hanging in the balance. You really get the sense of how massive this fight is, even without seeing much in the background aside from lightning. They could be duking it out in the far reaches of space.

These two horror icons clash in a big way in Vampirella vs. Re-Animator. They make for an unlikely pair, but for a pretty interesting dynamic. Writer Cullen Bunn brought out the best of both characters and delivered a frighteningly fun story. The door is left open for more and I would certainly be happy to see these two characters bump into each other again.
