Nycc 2012 Guide CoverAhhh...Convention season. It's that time of year when the nerds come out in droves and stand in line to get a precious sneak peek of upcoming comics, movies, TV shows, and video games. While the biggest convention of the year happened a few months back, the second largest is just around the corner. The New York Comic Con is set to kick off on Thursday, October 11th 2012 and I'm here to give you a breakdown of some of the highlights for horror fans this year.

To celebrate the fact that NYCC is just a few weeks before Halloween, Diamond Select Toys will be offering some special horror-themed vinyl bust banks at their booth (#2156). For just $20 each, you can take home a Walking Dead zombie, Universal's Frankenstein, or the Creature from the Black Lagoon. All three will be offered as special black-and-white editions and are debuting at NYCC and will be available at comic shops at a later date. Quantities will be limited, so act fast. There's going to be just 500 of the Walking Dead zombie and 300 each of the Universal monsters.

While IDW Publishing will not have a booth at this year's NYCC, its presence will be felt. Topps will be returning to the convention, showcasing a special variant cover for the Mars Attacks the Holidays 48-page one shot. This exclusive edition of the comic features a "Mini Martians" cover illustrated by Chris Giarusso, who has also been creating adorable variant covers for Image Comics as of late. As always, the book will be in short supply. Only 1,000 copies will be available and they're only going to be at the Topps Booth (#1761).

On the subject of variant covers, Titan Magazines is set to debut The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine the week after NYCC. Convention attendees can snag an early copy and get a special edition cover as well. Drawn by Walking Dead comic artist Charlie Adlard, the variant cover will only be available at the Titan Entertainment booth (#832). No word yet on the amount available, but variants like this will go fast so plan accordingly.

Image Comics is planning on making a big showing at NYCC this year with a bevy of creator signings at its booth (#1229). Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) is a spotlight guest this year and will be signing at the booth on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, but if you want to get his John Hancock you're going to need to get to the booth early. To get in line, you'll need a ticket! Otherwise, you'll be left with an unsigned comic. Speaking of The Walking Dead, you can pick up the red foil-stamped edition of the Compendium One hardcover at the Image booth. This run is limited to just 1,500 copies. Tim Seeley and Ron Marz will be on hand signing an NYCC exclusive variant cover to Witchblade #160 and Artifacts #21, respectively. Both are illustrated by incredibly talented Stjepan Sejic and will be limited to 1,000 copies each. Other creator signings include Jeremy Haun (The Darkness), Howard Chaykin (Black Kiss II), Glen Brunswick and Whilce Portico (Non-Humans), David Hine (Bulletproof Coffin, The Darkness), Jim McCann and Rodin Esquejo (Mind the Gap), Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder (Halloween Eve), and Scott Snyder, Scott Tuft, and Atilla Futaki (Severed). Phew...That's a lot of signings. The full schedule can be found here. Get your comics ready, folks!

Fans of Grimm Fairy Tales from Zenescope Entertainment will want to check out the special screening of the pilot of the animated series. Recently funded by a Kickstarter campaign, the first episode will be shown at a special party at Times Scare (669 8th Avenue, NYC) on Saturday, October 13th. Tickets are $75 and include the pilot screening, a one hour open bar, a Fairy Tale Burlesque show, a signed limited edition art print, and a Grimm Fairy Tales comic book that is exclusive to the event. Zenescope will also be debuting some new titles including the Grimm Fairy Tales 2012 Halloween Edition, Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Comic, and the Grimm Fairy Tales Giant Sized 2012. There will be 12 variant covers for new Zenescope titles available in limited quantities as well as a ton of other merchandise for you to check out at their booth (#1657). Raven Gregory, Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Patrick Shand, and other creators will be on hand for signings as well as cosplay queen Jessica Nigri. A full schedule can be found on their blog.

Dark Horse Comics is going to have a whole mess of creators available for signings at its booth throughout the convention. You can get a full schedule at its blog, but here's just a sampling of some of the talent that you'll be able to meet at NYCC: Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Lance Henrikson and Tom Mandrake (To Hell You Ride), Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Rebekah Isaacs (Angel & Faith), Tim Seeley (Ex Sanguine), Christopher Golden (Baltimore), Eric Powell (The Goon), and Jonathan Case (The Green River Killer). As if that wasn't enough, there will also be a special guest...you might have heard of him...Guillermo del Toro! You're going to want to make time to visit the Dark Horse booth this year.

Aspen Comics will have several creators at its booth (#1213) available for signings and appearances. Greg Pak (Dead Man's Run), Cory Smith (Broken Pieces), and Emilio Lopez (Charismagic: The Death Princess) are just some of those that will be on hand. On the exclusive front, Aspen will have the world premiere of the first issue of Charismagic: The Death Princess, three weeks before it will be in stores. The event will be celebrated with a special variant cover for the book, limited to just 300 copies. The final Aspen Tour Print of 2012 will also be available throughout the con.

The folks over at Troma Entertainment will have an appearance from the rare six foot gerbil known as Thelma at their booth (#903). Hot off her role in Lloyd Kaufman's latest film, Return to Nuke 'Em High, Thelma the Wonder Gerbil will be available for photographs at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 13th. Unlike some other celebrities appearing at NYCC, neither Thelma nor Kaufman will charge you for pictures or autographs. Before you meet the Wonder Gerbil though, you may want to make your way to 34th Street and 11th Avenue at 2:00 PM. That's where the Cretin-themed parade will be kicking off featuring classic Troma characters and members of the cast and crew from Return to Nuke 'Em High. The parade will march from there to the 35th street entrance to the Javits Center.

If you can't make it to NYCC this year, Starwarp Concepts has something just for you. They're having an online book convention running until Monday, October 15th. You'll be able to get the same discounts that you'd get at the con. You just have to pay postage this time. Additionally, fans have access to some free digital comics and their own attendee badge. As a special for the event, you'll be able to snag a digital copy of Lorelei: Sects and the City for $3.99.

Of course, there are plenty of other panels, screenings, signings, booths, and more to check out at this year's New York Comic Con. I hope this guide helps you plan your trip to maximize your horror swag. My only other piece of advice is to wear comfortable shoes. You're going to be doing a lot of walking and even more standing around.

Which one of these NYCC items or signings are you most looking forward to?
