Blackwood Large

From Australian director Andrew Montague comes Blackwood, a creepy little short about a sound recordist who ventures off to record wild foley (sound effects to later be added in to a film) after a disastrous day of shooting. She begins to hear strange noises, and follows them deeper into the woods.

This is the second short from director Montague, whose previous work includes VFX, motion design and directing commercials. After exploring the California Redwoods, he returned to his native Australia to find a similar location, and it appears that he struck gold, as the locations are gorgeous and seem more like something you'd find in New Zealand.

As for why Montague decided to make his protagonist a foley artist: "I love sound design and wanted to explore sound scape as a way to drive tension." It's a choice that works well, and at times feels like a horror version of Brian DePalma's Blow Out.

The piece has the underpinnings of an H.P. Lovecraft story, and apparently that's no accident. Montague had been reading a lot of Lovecraft, and specifically become interested in the story Dagon. He wanted "…lots of atmosphere and dread followed by an abrupt, terrifying ending".

Blackwood succeeds in no small part due to the sound design, courtesy of sound designer Nick van Cuylenburg, who Montague worked closely with for months to get the right sound.

But enough talk – check out the short yourself below!

RJ MacReady digs horror movies, even though his first memory of horror films is watching the first Friday the 13th movie while a bear mauled his family in the other room. He admits that most of his bio is as fake as his moniker, but witness protection won't let him use his real name.
