Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1 Interview & Exclusive Preview

Interview conducted by James Ferguson

This July sees the release of the third installment of Valiant Entertainment's series, Britannia, following the world's first detective in Antonius Axia. Lost Eagles of Rome, written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Robert Gill, follows Antonius as he searches through the Germanic forest of Tottenwald for mighty Roman eagles only to endure a terrifying journey into the dark heart of belief itself as unseen dimensions are revealed.

I had a chance to speak with Milligan and Gill about the book and Valiant Entertainment was kind enough to share an exclusive preview of the first issue which you can check out below.

James Ferguson: Where do we find Antonius Axia when Lost Eagles of Rome starts?

Peter Milligan: We find him in a Rome that’s been rocked by news of a terrible defeat of the Roman army in Germany and the loss of something of supreme importance to the Romans. This has caused great unrest in the city and ill will toward the emperor Nero.

JF: How accessible is Lost Eagles of Rome to new readers?

PM: It’s incredibly accessible. Of course, I want readers to go back and read the previous storylines where we discover more about what made the detectioner who he is, but you can certainly begin right here and quickly grasp what’s going on.

JF: Robert, how does it feel to jump into Britannia with Lost Eagles of Rome?

Robert Gill: It's great. The story is a nice continuation on the mythos of Antonius Axia that seamlessly builds on the first two series, while presenting a whole new mystery that takes him to a new, unexpected location. There's an absolute plethora of my favorite things to draw in this series which I hope culminate into one hell of a visual experience for the reader.

JF: On a scale of one to ten, how evil is the mad emperor, Nero?

PM: One is tempted to say “eleven” but I think things and Nero are a little more nuanced than that. Certainly, by today’s – or perhaps any day’s – standards, many of Nero’s actions are evil: the way he kicked his pregnant wife to death, killed his mother, and burned Christians doesn’t exactly make him a pleasant character. But he is an emperor and an emperor of the Julio-Claudian line to boot, and these guys do not conform to normal, moral human standards. As well as being evil, Nero is also exercised about the vulnerability of his position. History tells him that the Roman court is a nest of vipers, and that the people could turn against him at any minute. The idea of the people turning against Nero, and Nero’s reaction, is something that the Lost Eagles of Rome explores.

JF: What kind of monsters can we expect in this new series?

PM: As in all the Britannia stories, though there are elements bordering on the supernatural, the biggest monsters are probably some of the men and women that Antonius Axia encounters on his adventures.

JF: Will Antonius Axia ever meet other characters from the Valiant Universe?

PM: We’ve no plans for this but I see no reason why in certain circumstances this can’t happen. You could definitely see some kind of crossover with Britannia and the Eternal Warrior or Ivar, Timewalker, for instance.

Horror DNA would like to thank Peter Milligan and Robert Gill for taking the time to speak with us. Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1 is set for release on July 25th, 2018.
