Dead By Daylight 01

I've heard nothing but good things about Dead by Daylight from Behaviour Interactive, but I haven't had a chance to try it out. If you've been following along at home, you'll know that I've become horrible at video games over the past few years, but that didn't stop me from trying some out at New York Comic Con. Ryan Nobles, our video game expert, briefed me before I tried my luck with Dead by Daylight.

The game is set up so that one player is a killer and the other four are would-be victims. The targets have to work together to fix a generator and open a way out before the killer...well...kills them. I played the Stranger Things version with characters that closely resembled those from the show. I was proud of myself that I wasn't the first person killed, but I was the second. It was tough at first, but I can see how it can get easier as you get used to the controls and the layout. There were lines of people around the booth to play it, so I felt a little bad jumping in to try it out, but that's what I do for all of you.

In addition to checking out the game first hand, I spoke with Mathieu Côté, Game Director of Dead by Daylight and Head of Partnerships about what's coming for the franchise.

James Ferguson: Did you ever expect Dead by Daylight to be as big as it is?

Mathieu Côté: [Laughs] Absolutely never. To be fair, last year we were impressed the game was still going on, two and a half years in. We planned to create more content, but even then we had no idea just how big it would be today. With the release of Stranger Things and the last few announcements we've made, Dead by Daylight is bigger than it's ever been.

JF: How has the reception been from new Switch fans?

MC: Switch fans are voracious for new content. This version has been very well received. I think the advance copies we made for pre-orders were not sufficient, so we're making sure everyone can get their hands on it. Digital versions are not a problem of course. Japan has been really big for us. Obviously the Switch is extremely popular there. It's been great.

JF: What's next for Dead by Daylight? Any more slasher franchise DLC coming soon?

MC: ...Yes. We'll continue with the cadence we've set, releasing a new chapter every three months. Most of them will still have one killer, one survivor, and one new map. Some will have variations. This one has two survivors. Sometimes we try to surprise people. We also have the archives coming. In between each chapter, we'll have the archives which are a big tome of different objectives and quests for the players that unlock lore and new cosmetics. More content than ever before is coming in Dead by Daylight.

Dead by Daylight is currently available for Steam, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Horror DNA would like to thank Mathieu Côté for taking the time to speak with us.
