If David Robert Mitchell's It Follows hinted at STDs as a subject for horror (even if he denies it), then Jonathan Straiton's Night of Something Strange looks set to wrap that STD banner round a sledgehammer and plough it firmly into your face when it receives its European premiere at Horror Channel Frightfest 2016. Straiton and producer Ron Bonk have collaborated on a number of projects over the last 10 years. Night of Something Strange is part of a Grindhouse double feature, with its sister film She Kills, in a similar vein to Tarantino and Rodriguez's Death Proof / Planet Terror pairing.

The idea came from Bonk's teasing of Straiton over a fling he had with a girl, where he refused to kiss her because of a cold sore on her lip. After much ribbing with STD jokes, an idea hit Straiton about having an STD that could turn those infected into the living dead, a premise he thought cool as a starter for a horror film. While at Ohio's Cinema Wasteland horror convention, Straiton approached Bonk with the concept of an STD Grindhouse double feature and so both Night of Something Strange and She Kills were born. Bonk grew up on 70s Grindhouse and wanted to pay homage to that era with his segment, having his lead character embrace the STD as a weapon of revenge. Straiton's influences lay firmly in the 80s and thus Night of Something Strange is his love letter to films such as the Friday the 13th series, Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Creeps.

Five teenage friends set out for the beach on their Spring Break vacation. Good times are cut short when one of the group, Carrie, contracts a deadly sexual transmitted disease during a bathroom stop. When they stop for the night at an isolated motel, the real terror begins when the STD virus starts running rampant, turning those infected into the living dead. However, there’s more going on at the motel than meets the eye.
