Gotham City Monsters, the new mini-series from writer Steve Orlando and artist Amancay Nahuelpan, assembles a team of monstrous heroes from the DC Universe including Frankenstein, Killer Croc, and Lady Clayface. DC Comics has shared an exclusive preview of the first issue, due out on September 11th and I was able to speak to writer Steve Orlando once again about the project. Needless to say, this is a book to watch.

Leviathan has dismantled S.H.A.D.E.-and that means Frankenstein is once again a free agent! Now he can set his sights on his former mentor, Melmoth, the one evil that got away. With bad things happening all across the Multiverse, this may be Frankenstein's last shot at setting things right. Of course, Melmoth has his own agenda, and it's going to take more than a lone monster to take him down. So Frankenstein heads to Gotham City in search of allies and recruits Killer Croc, Lady Clayface, Orca and vampire Andrew Bennett. But will even these dread creatures be enough to save humanity before the entire cosmos collapses in on itself?

James Ferguson: How weird is it for Gotham City citizens to live near giant skeletons of monsters in the middle of the street?  You'd think someone would have cleaned that up by now.
Steve Orlando: Oh, I don't know—the government still hasn't helped Flint. I think with Monster Town, you have a case of government agencies fighting over who can take the blame and who can dodge it, and in the meantime, as usual, people have found a way to live on and fight on. While those in power argue over who has to pay and who has to take responsibility, the citizens of Gotham, as they always have, are carving out a life. In a city that's lived through Zero Year, No Man's Land, and more, the key for Gothamites is just getting through to the next day. They're tough as hell, and rent in Monster Town is cheap.

JF: The main characters are not the only monsters in this book.  There are some awesome and frightening creatures in these pages.  How were these selected?
SO: The epicenter of these characters was Frankenstein from the start—who among the monsters will contrast his unique tragic heroism the most? And, knowing we were going to Gotham meant we had lots of creatures to choose from. We've got people he can learn from, people he can teach, and people he'll want to punch in the face, all on the same team. And the best part is, as you've seen, Monster Town is FULL of creatures, on and off this team—when it comes to that, they're there to keep Amancay on his toes and make the book as fun as possible to draw! Amancay’s energy is in turn infused into its pages and sent on to DC fans to absorb!

Gotham City Monsters #1 is set for release on September 11th, 2019.
