Martian Manhunter #6 EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW

I was sleeping on Martian Manhunter and quickly regretted it when I saw how terrifying and compelling the series was. Writer Steve Orlando and artist Riley Rossmo are delivering some of the most unsettling body horror on the stands today. Publisher DC Comics is finishing up the first half of the twelve issue series next week and has shared an exclusive preview of the book here. I also had a chance to speak briefly with Orlando about the comic.

Mars burns and the sins of J'onn J'onnz come back to kill him! J'onn will do everything in his power to save his family from H'ronnmeer's Curse-but once they discover the type of Manhunter he really is, will they want to go anywhere with him?

James Ferguson: How do you approach a character like J'onn J'onzz? There are so many layers to him and he's been through so much.
Steve Orlando: Well, the good thing is with Martian Manhunter we were not bound by continuity so much as an obligation to and respect for the character. J'onn is someone who's been through so much, as you say, and he's the reliable rock that the other superheroes of the DCU lean on. But how did we get him to that spot? How did he achieve his wise, leveled headed, stoic point of view? We wanted with this book to give J'onn the respect he's always commanded within the DCU, but from a creative standpoint—make this rich, emotional, in-depth true and hard science fiction that makes you love his life on Mars, love his family, so you truly feel how much he lost, how enormous it is. And then, on Earth, as he works through that and becomes the hero we know he is in the present, we feel his triumph all the more.

JF: The body horror in Martian Manhunter is next level.  How do some of these twisted images come together?  Do you ask Riley Rossmo to draw the creepiest thing he can imagine?
SO: My collaboration with Riley is one of incredible trust as respect. We love the same challenging media, and we love challenging each other as creators. We're both into the strange and obscene, the weird and absurd.
I approach all my collaborations this way. On Martian Manhunter, and the upcoming Gotham City Monsters, I work an open format script that gives my co-creators room to innovate. The body horror in Martian Manhunter comes to life in that way—as a writer, I build the story armature and plant the seeds for some disturbing imagery, inspiring my peers to pick up the baton and bring it to life.

Martian Manhunter #6 is set for release on June 26th, 2019.
