Smacking the Tar Out of a Demon - Tieren Trevallion Talks Hellboy: Her Fatal Hour

Interview conducted by James Ferguson

This week sees the release of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Her Fatal Hour, a new one-shot from Dark Horse Comics serving as a follow up to The Beast of Vargu. Written by Mike Mignola, illustrated by Tiernen Trevallion, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robins, the comic explores another tale from Big Red's past. I had a chance to speak to Trevallion about the project.

Gone, but not forgotten! Years after Hellboy's ill-fated tangle with the Beast of Vargu, the Romani women who helped him need that debt repaid. Claimed by a demon in a romance gone wrong, the younger woman reaches out to Hellboy through the power of a familiar old puppet, and a supernatural confrontation full of magic and mayhem ensures! In a second short story, Hellboy goes head to head with a phantom who is looking for an object completely unknown to the living people the ghost is terrorizing.

James Ferguson: How does it feel to draw a character like Hellboy with such a storied legacy?

Tieren Trevallion: It’s an honour. Also, as a longtime fan, I won’t pretend that I wasn’t a good mix of nervous and excited.

JF: How was it working with Mike Mignola? He's an artist as well, so is that a different dynamic than your typical setup?

TT: I found Mike and everyone at Dark Horse very easy to work with. Everyone’s extremely professional, as you’d expect. As you say, Mike being an artist makes a difference from the point of view of the script. It had all the hallmark Mignolaverse elements: a charming mix of horror, humour, and pathos. But to work from it was great, enough of a challenge to keep me thinking, but nothing over-written, and no overly complex panel descriptions…. But then, simplicity in any creative endeavour is often the most difficult thing to achieve.

JF: What was your favorite part to draw in Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Her Fatal Hour?

TT: I really enjoyed the flashback scenes, but my favourite part was drawing the big red fellah smacking the tar out of a demon, dressed in a ladies' nightgown. WHAM!

JF: How did you settle upon the designs for the creatures seen in this one shot?

TT: For "Her Fatal Hour" I wanted something slightly old-school, something you might find a primitive medieval carving of in a hidden corner of a church. I also wanted to suggest that it never quite got the chance to finish its transformation.

JF: What other characters in the B.P.R.D. Universe would you like to tackle?

TT: Lobster Johnson! “Here is the claw…” To be honest, it’s all good. I’d be honoured to be asked to work on anything from that world.

JF: What other monsters would you like to see Hellboy fight?

TT: Hellboy’s tackled pretty much everything, but I don’t think he’s had to deal with an army of tiny demonic clockwork nuns…

Horror DNA would like to thank Tiernen Trevallion for taking the time to speak with us. He's currently offering limited edition giclee prints of the comic cover, signed and numbered through Facebook. Each print comes with an A5 sketch (Mignolaverse only, no requests). Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Her Fatal Hour is set for release on December 2nd, 2020.
