The Top 10 Horror Movies on Amazon Prime for Free That I Would Watch Before I'd Watch Rob Zombie's Halloween

Written by R.J. MacReady

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the irregular "The Top 10 Horror Movies on Amazon Prime for Free That I Would Watch Before I'd Watch Rob Zombie's Halloween" column.

Now, I'm not going to blame you if you like RZ's Halloween. Just like I wouldn't blame a person who had never eaten steak but was given a plate of dog poop with barbecue sauce on top. That person might try the dog poop and be like, "I don't understand what everybody's problem with this is. What's disgusting about it?"

So we don't blame you. We pity you.

But anyway! I'm not going to hit the big, classic movies on this list. Movies like The Shining and An American Werewolf In London and From Dusk till Dawn are available on Amazon, and we all know how amazing they are.

Hide and Creep

This flick from Chance Shirley's been a favorite of other reviewers on this website, and it's definitely a solidly-fun entry into the zombie genre. Many call it "Clerks meets Zombies", and I guess it's accurate enough, but see for yourself why this is rocketing up the Amazon list.

Coherence

Not purely a horror flick (even though it's under the horror category on Amazon), it features Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Nicholas Brendon staying sober long enough to put in a decent performance in a mind-bending tale of what happens to a dinner party the night a comet passes by overhead. Don't go look it up; just start playing it and see where it leads.

Ghostwatcher II

I'm not a fan of the first one, but I found this one to be a more interesting and well-done film, probably due to the fact that the director got a tiny bit more money to play with from the original's deal.

Garden of Hedon

More a mystery with horror tropes (giallo and slasher, and a hulking monster thing) than an out-right horror flick, Garden of Hedon will probably take a couple of views to "get", but that's not to say you won't enjoy seeing where it goes the first time.

In the Dark

In the Dark is a horror anthology, and like all of them, there's good and there's not as good. I wouldn't say any of them are bad, but there are definitely standouts. I'm not going to tell you what they are as your mileage may vary, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Buy Absentia from Amazon US

Absentia

Mike Flanagan is one of those rare breakout indie guys. He did Absentia, and moved up to bigger-budgeted fare (the well-done Oculus, and Hush, both streaming now on Netflix). But check out where he started with this moody no-budget flick with a cool Doug Jones cameo.

Buy Invasion from Amazon US

Invasion

A little too long but still an interesting experiment from the director of the '80s flying-sword epic Sword and The Sorceror, Albert Pyun, this entire movie is told from the camera of a police car that experiences the events of an alien invasion. A bit gimmicky? Sure. Still, it has its moments.

Hooked Up

I reviewed Hooked Up here, so I'm not gonna go over it again. Read my review, and if you're interested, start streaming. Did I mention it's free with your Amazon Prime membership? You're welcome.

Buy Madman from Amazon US

Madman

Okay, not a low-budget indie but one of the original madman-stalks-a-summer-camp movies from 1982. Probably before you were born. Now I'm depressing myself. Put your phone down and go watch it.

Banana Motherfucker

Full disclosure: I have not seen this movie. But with a name like Banana Motherfucker, I'd check it out. And hell, I'd check it out twice before I'd watch Rob Zombie's Halloween again.

See you next time!

RJ MacReady digs horror movies, even though his first memory of horror films is watching the first Friday the 13th movie while a bear mauled his family in the other room. He admits that most of his bio is as fake as his moniker, but witness protection won't let him use his real name.
