From the producers of Devil’s Rejects and Halloween comes American Satan.
American Satan is sex, drugs and rock-n-roll for the new generation. It’s heavy metal musicians selling their souls to Satan for fame and fortune but they get more than they planned. As the band, The Relentless, moves up in stardom, they develop drug addictions, they kill a guy in a bar fight which then makes their fans kill their bullies causing a social issue. They cheat on their girlfriends and have sex with underage girls; the whole rock-n-roll lifestyle with plenty of super naked orgy montages. The music the bands creates is pretty decent and matches the band’s persona and in turn ties the whole movie together. The whole soundtrack is great actually, it takes me back to the earlier 2000s and I’m totally into that.
Malcolm McDowell comes into play as the “Satan” character, Mr. Capricorn, who basically convinces them that if they burn Lily’s (Jesse Sullivan) ex-boyfriend, the man who ruined their big chance, alive, that they will gain stardom. A proposition that Johnny (Andy Biersack) takes full heartedly, as anyone would. When the band gets some fame, Johnny promises his girlfriend Gretchen (Olivia Culpo), “I wouldn’t chase my dreams if you weren’t going to be in them forever.” The famous last words of someone who is clearly going to cheat on their girlfriend the moment they get any sort of fame, and BOOM, he does with his bandmate Lily. Then the two develop a heroin addiction because, you know, it’s not a rock-n-roll movie unless someone gets hooked on something.
Adorable John Bradley (Sam from Game of Thrones) is in this and plays Ricky Rollins and I adore him forever. I have been so excited to see him in something else and I love it. Ricky is the band’s manager who helps them get gigs and tours around with them and participates in the ritual, but it ends terribly for him when he overdoses on cocaine about midway through the film. I wanted more of him but also, I get it. I get what they were doing. Denise Richards plays one of the Johnny’s moms and she is hot as she always is. Like, how is possible for her to be so hot like all the time? Go away you beautiful masterpiece. The other actors in the film are quite good and play their parts so well, I am very impressed by the caliber of this film.
I really like American Satan. It’s unapologetic and embraces the rock-n-roll stereotype. Plus, by adding in the Satanism aspects to it, it really makes the film that much more gritty and disturbing. The fact that it rarely takes place during the day makes it more uncomfortable. Check this movie out, buy the soundtrack, hail Satan.
