Emanuelle is a sexually liberated independent woman working as a photojournalist in Europe. She seeks out interesting exotic stories from around the world. She travels to New York and accepts the assignment of revealing the steamy inner secrets of the city’s upper crust society. She promptly leaves the city and heads to a secluded ranch where she serves as a love slave to a sadistic brothel master. Armed with a hidden camera, she documents scenes of true decadence. She moves on to a spa that caters to frustrated socialites and participates in further sexcapades. On her travels she connects with a conservative D.C. politician who surprises her with a disturbing bedroom kink. He shows her a snuff film during sex to further arouse her. It’s up to Emanuelle to expose them all and with her striking beauty and unique sensual talents, she is definitely up to the challenge.

In her novel The Joys of a Woman (1957), author Marayat Rollet-Andriane (aka Emmanuelle Arsan) introduced the world to the character Emmanuelle, the bored housewife of a French diplomat who freely explores her sexuality. The book was a best seller and in 1974 was adapted into the French softcore erotic film Emmanuelle, starring Sylvia Kristel (Lady Chatterley’s Lover). A box office smash, the character and actress returned in a number of sequels over the next decade. The success inspired a wave of unofficial international knock-off productions that kept the premise but not Kristel and changed the spelling of the character’s name to Emanuelle.

Italy’s Black Emanuelle (1975) introduced actress Laura Gemser (Women’s Prison Massacre), who made the role her own and following Kristel, became the second-most popular face connected to the franchise. Over the next two years, Gemser made five more pictures in the series, including Emanuelle in Bangkok (1976), Emanuelle in America (1977), Emanuelle Around the World (1977), Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977) and Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade (1978), all for director Joe D’Amato (Death Smiles on a Murderer). For more than two decades D’Amato churned out countless erotic pictures and some choice horror movies too. Knowing you can only tantalize audiences so far within the confines of softcore storytelling, he also kept one foot firmly planted in the hardcore pornography genre.

Emanuelle in America is something of a mashup picture pulling from all aspects of D’Amato’s tastes as a filmmaker. It begins as another harmless erotica tale filled with beautiful women, lots of nudity and steamy situations. At roughly the 20-minute mark, D’Amato throws audiences a massive curve with the arrival of a scene featuring bestiality! I guess he shows some restraint in the content, but whatever mood he was building is instantly shattered. From there we return to heavy-petting and simulated activities – until D’Amato strikes again, this time inserting hardcore footage into several sex scenes. Not done with viewers yet, the director introduces a third act surprise featuring a fake, but well-made, snuff movie. Emanuelle watches it and encourages her mark to take her to see a live event being filmed. I don’t know anyone who would find this material arousing, but here it is.

Emanuelle in America is one of the wilder entries in the series and definitely contains its share of surprises. This is a movie that pushes the boundaries of 1970s exploitation flicks. I sound like an old woman clutching her pearls, but I must admit I was caught off-guard when the woman got all handsy with a horse. It’s bizarre that this picture made it to Blu-ray before so many other cult titles, but for the right audience this is a welcome addition to their collection.

Video and Audio:

Mondo Macabro delivers a brand new 4K scan and remaster of the original camera negative for a beautiful new transfer, presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Image quality is quite pleasing and the picture is clean and free from dirt, scratches or other debris. There are a few brief moments of fading, but overall colors are bold and well-balanced. The abundance of skin benefits from natural looking flesh tones and there is also an increase in detail over the previous DVD release.

There are two audio tracks which provide viewers with the option of hearing the movie in English DTS-HD MA 2.0 or Italian DTS-HD MA 2.0. The English dub sounds natural with clear and understandable dialogue throughout.

Optional English subtitles are included for anyone in need.

Special Features:

In their insightful commentary track, film critics Bruce Holocheck and Nathanial Thompson begin with an overview of the Emmanuelle franchise and its place in Euro-sleaze cinema. They discuss Joe D’Amato’s lengthy filmography and his longtime working relationship with star Laura Gemser. They share a lot of information about the actress and some of the other cast members. There is also some discussion concerning the inclusion of the hardcore material. I found this commentary informative and entertaining and well worth a listen.

From Two M’s to One – The Story of Em(m)anuelle (36 minutes) is a retrospective documentary on the complete series hosted by critic David Flint. He examines the history and popularity of the character and offers biographical information on the actresses who starred in the films. D’Amato gets a fair amount of coverage as does the worldwide longevity of the franchise.

Joe D’Amato Totally Uncut: Erotic Experiences (62 minutes) is a lengthy interview with the legendary director reflecting on his career. He admits to enjoying shocking audiences by blending genres and goes on to discuss his preference for softcore erotica over pornography. He covers a lot of ground in his filmography and has nice things to say about star Laura Gemser. The interview is in Italian with English subtitles.
